What are the best sound cards to use with Band in a box? My use includes recording guitars and a midi keyboard. My present setup is just the stock mobo sound chip which has a lot of latency and could sound better. In order to make the guitar sync up with the track I need to play ahead of the beat which is very hard to do musically. The midi keyboard is so far behind the track that it can't be used at all. Should I get a USB box for the guitar and keyboard or just a card that goes into one of the computer's slots? Thanks for your suggestions!

I use a Yamaha Audiogram 6 here with a Tyros Keyboard with 0 latency. It has 2 mic inputs and comes with phantom power. Check out YouTube for demo's on it. Mine has 6 inputs and it connects via USB. It also has its own ASIO driver as well that works flawlessly with Biab.
Trax
It does NOT have a midi synth, but usually comes bundled with Cubase/Sonar LE and they have their own VST synths. Those synths are propietary though.

There is another alternative you can try right away and doesn't cost any money.
ASIO4ALL converts your built in soudncard to run ASIO drivers by doing a conversion to the WDM they already run.
This allows realtime playing of MIDI synths.

Of courae, if you are serious about the sound quality of your music recording, an afermarket soundcard is likely still going to be in your future. Check out the M-Audio line, they are known for great driver support and also to work and play well for most people using pgmusic and other products. You can go uSB or PCI slot with M-Audio's different models.

If your computer is an older one and is structured around AC97 there is a 3rd party set drivers that provide both WDM & ASIO drivers. I use them on my older Toshiba lappy and can get down to 2 ms latency with not issues. I just need to find them again or I'll email LaMury for them. He's the developer.

Thanks for your answer and offer for the drivers. The BIAB service rep assisted me in retrieving and installing drivers from the web. The latency persisted, so I'm considering new hardware. My computer is 4 years old and it may be about time to get a new computer also. Your suggestions are appreciated.

Well that computer probably is an AC97 card. You should really try the ASIO drivers I can provide you.Lex Nahamury is a software developer/programmer and also a pro keyboard player. he developed these for his own use to be able to use a variety of soft synths in his band. I'll find them and post a link. Try if you want. I use them.

OH here's the link. There's a detection utility that will let you know if the driver will work. Don't follow the install instructions. All you need to do is unzip the drivers to a location were you can find them. Then in device manager just do an update of the drivers for that card & navigate to the new drivers. I worked with Lex on the testing of these before he put them out and also confirmed my install method with him. Much easier. Native ASIO Drivers For AC'97 Complient Sound Cards

I just pulled my Sound Card out (M-Audi Delta Audiophile) and swapped it for a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra USB external. Sounds just as good, and also gives phantom power to my condenser mike so eliminated a mixer.
STILL cannot record "what you hear" with Windows 7, but I can thank Microsoft for THAT bonehead omission.

This works for some folks but not sure if this will work for you but might be worth a try. To enable it: 1. Right click on the speaker icon in the bottom right. 2. Choose Recording Devices 3. In the empty white space, right-click and choose Show Disabled Devices. You should see Stereo Mix appear in the list. 4. Right click on Stereo Mix and choose Enable. 5. Right click on Stereo Mix again, and choose Set as Default Device. Now you can record anything you hear through your speakers. Brian

PhillyJazz, Does your M-Audio Fast Track Ultra handle the BIAB generated sound too or just what you are recording through it? In other words, can an external sound card replace an internal sound card?

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
