The "copyright symbol" thread was interesting. Now that we all know how to produce a copyright symbol, does anybody know how to produce a proper flat sign (instead of the usual lowercase b)?
Far more elusive than the copyright sign!

G'day Mike,
ya need 2 things:
1) a font that has a flat symbol in it and
2) the ASCII code or letter equivalence for it...

There are lots of fonts around that will do the job. Most of them come with notation applications. If you look at the Noteworthy Composer Scriptorium: www.nwc-scriptorium.org you will fine a "helpful files" link that will take you to a selection of files - some of which are fonts and some of those include the symbols you are looking for. You will also find some font suites that I've put together specifically for NWC2 but which are usable in other applications too.

There may even be an off-chance that some of those PG Music fonts might contain this or that flat sign ...

True - the flat symbol is available in the following locations in the following PG fonts:

! or chr 033 in PGChords
b or chr 098 in PGJazz
b or chr 098 in PGMusic F
„ or chr 0132 in PGTextj

PGTextj is the only generally usable text font among them, the rest are designed for constructing notation.

I have a similar situation in my *Dings font suites where there are 2 fonts of the 6 in each suite designed for text use: the *Text and *TextEuro fonts. I note with some amusement that I have also used chr 0132 for the flat symbol.

If you are doing a lot of writing and need music symbols within your word processor, google "music notation symbols for word processor" to see what is available out there.

Some music notation softwares use the Windows Font directory to install some fonts that can be accessed via certain word processors that can find them. Check the font list in your word processor carefully if you have installed a fullblown music notation software.

Start -> Accessories --> System Tools --> Character Map can tell you a lot about all the Fonts loaded into your System, what keys they are mapped to, and even allow you to copy and paste from there. All of the pgmusic fonts are listed on mine. Should be on yours, too. If you are working in a word document and need the flat sign, you can copy and paste one from there, from then on you can copy and paste it again and again from inside the document. Find and Replace with yourself as the judge is your friend here, you can type lowercase b's and later on replace just the right ones throughout the document in this manner rather quickly.

G'day Mac,
as an alternative to m$ Character Map I find that a freeware utility called Typecase by Anthony Appleyard is very useful. Very easy to use, much clearer than Charmap, and the right price...

It is available at: http://www.buckrogers.demon.co.uk/software/typecase_vc.zip

Yes, there are many alternatives out there and I do indeed use one myself.

My reference to the Character Map is simply because everybody should have one.

Notice the first mention of googling up there.

This is why I'm hesitant to write a BIAB manual (grin).

Hmm, yeah,
I understand. Though if you could get it under the actual "BIAB for Dummies" title and PG were to endorse it I reckon there's not only a very large community to aid, but a nice income stream too...

Let's face it - you have one of the most extensive knowledge bases around on this product right there between your ears, just next to all that recording studio experience...

I don't want to use the "dummies" title. Firstoff, I'm sure that belongs to the people with the popular yellow books. Why pay them?

Secondly, I don't like to call anyone a dummy. That doesn't mean I wouldn't do it, just that I don't like to do it, especially people I haven't even met yet, knowmean?

Titles have never been much of a problem for me, the meat in between the title page and the endcover, now that's another story. Same with songwriting, titles and hooks come quickly for me, the meat in between the bread often languishes as I rewrite, rethink, recapitulate ad infinitum. And then still manage to get it not to my liking after all that.

Yup, actually I agree, still, the titles of the books in question do not, I think, come across as being derogatory. And they have a mass market appeal...

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
