Hello:

I have Biab 2009 build 282 and I've recently noticed that the Real Tracks are playing slighty late compared to the midi.

I've been using Biab for about 5 years on this setup with this computer and have been using the Real Tracks from their first appearance. Never a problem

I have an M-Audio Card 2496 using ASIO drivers. Win XP, SP3 Pentium 4. I'm using an external synth for midi.

When I play the same song in RealBand using the same ASIO drivers there is no sync problem.
Strange. Also, when I switch to MME drivers in Biab there is no sync problem with Real Tracks and midi.

I've tried returning factory settings, both by deleting the interface and mysetup files and by using the Option Menu for return to factory settings. Neither makes any difference. Using ASIO drivers I still have a sync problem with Real Tracks playing slighty late compared to midi.

I'd appreciate any suggestions because this is very frustrating and because the audio and mid sync has always been rock solid until now using ASIO.

Thanks.

John

What are you using for a MIDI synth?

Are you using the same synth in RealBand as in BIAB?

Hi Mac:

I'm using a Roland JV-1080 for midi.
I use the same synth for midi in Real Band with the same Audio/Midi set up and no sync problem

Biab used to be rock solid with Real Tracks and Midi using ASIO drivers.

I don't have a midi/real tracks sync problem in BIAB if I either:
1) use MME drivers or
2) use a DXi synth and ASIO in Biab, but I prefer to use the Roland.

And, as I said, I don't have a midi/real tracks sync problem in Real Band using ASIO drivers, Real Tracks and the external synth.

Thanks for any suggestions.

John

*Does BIAB report the same latency figure as RealBand when using ASIO drivers for each?

I'm not sure I know where to look in each application for the latency.

I can check the latency in samples and ms in the M-audio Delta panel for my 2496, but I don't know where to look in Biab and RealBand.

BIAB - Opts. --> MIDI/Audio driver setup

RB = Prefs -> MIDI (investigate all three options there)

Using ASIO for both --

Biab midi drivers:
Driver latency -- 0 ms
Timer resolution -- 1 ms

Biab Audio
Audio offset -- 0 ms
Audio latency -- 0 ms
---------------------------------------------------
RealBand

Midi timer period -- 10 ms
Visual Delay (synth latency) -- 0 ms
Audio Delay -- 0 ms

I tried changing the midi timer resolution to 10 ms in Biab, but it didn't make a difference.

The strange thing here is that the RealTracks slight delay problem seems to have resolved itself a bit lately.

I still occasionally get a render in Biab that plays the real tracks slightly late, (maybe about 10-14 ms) but if I hit F4 once or twice, to let Biab re-render, it seems to sync up pretty well.

I'm not sure why.

Thanks for your help.

Zero mS is pushing it. Try changing the ASIO buffer size in your soundcard's ASIO control panel, bump it up at least by one increment, possibly more. You must do that with BIAB completely shut down (or RB) and then reopen the programs and check that latency box again.

A good area to be in would be anywhere from 2mS to about 25mS max, it depends on your system, etc.

But 0mS is not a good setting at all. I'm frankly surprised that the Delta card can even do that, maybe you aren't using ASIO. My 2496 stays set at 256 in the buffer settings in the Delta Control Panel for ASIO. BIAB reports 7mS latency, so does RealBand. All is in sync all the time.

Hi Mac:

I'm definitely using ASIO for my Delta 2496.
I'm not saying that I'm setting the Delta control panel for 0 ms latency.

I also set my Delta control panel for 256 samples, and at 44.1 kHz, the Delta control panel says that's about 5 ms latency.

But I don't see any comparable latency figures in any of the driver sections of BIAB or RealBand.

In which specific boxes of those driver windows are you seeing the ms latency that matches what you have in the Delta control panel?

Did Biab and Real Band enter those latencies automatically or did you perform any actions in Biab and RealBand to show what the latencies are?

Thanks.

The latency box in either program is followed by, "mS" for milliSeconds.

That figure is filled out automatically for you when using ASIO, unlike when using MME drivers, where you can enter your own number.

Inside BB, it will be in the MIDI Input/Output window, to the left of these DXi button on the lower side there.

Inside RB, it will be located in the Prefs, MIDI Devices window IIRC.

There is also a lateny wizard inside RB...

(0 mS is fine for use with true hardware MIDI synth, BTW)

Thanks for your help with my audio latency problem.

For the time being, it seems to have resolved itself.

So thanks again.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
