I was entering a Bill Evans tune today and discovered there is a missing chord type:

diminished Major 7th.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diminished_major_seventh_chord

one can almost simulate this with a slash and sub so for example for Bb dim Maj7 use Dbdim/Bb
but this is a pain - non intuitive and not guaranteed to give the correct sound.

Please add this chord to the ones supported in BIAB.

Just for curiosity, what tune is that?

I know it's not the same, but some other BIAB chord types you might be able to get by with would be XmMaj7 or maybe X#9#11 or Xmaj9#11. And there is always X7alt. But something is wrong with all of them.

And, you can't use XmMaj7#11 or xMaj7#9#11 and they also have added undesired notes.

Pretty wild stuff. The slash chords are probably your best solution now.

Why not give us the option of entering/creating new chords such as the above dim Maj7???

Well, that would work for MIDI but would not work for existing RealTracks, as such user-created chords were not recorded. There would have to be a substitution table to some other chord that is already supported.

You could use the custom Chord Shortcut thing to have BB write that slash chord every time you need it, until such time as development may or may not add the chord to the chordlist.

Chord Shortcuts are user definable and are a nice way to set things up for doing song entry and not having to type all the slashes and other strange things we have to remember and do in order to have bb play what we want to hear that's not included in the chordlist at present.

Of course, it still displays as that annoying slash chord, just speeds up entry.

And its also the reason for the jar of whiteout and the copy machine here, correcting those easy to roll bb fakesheets manually to reflect what the other musicians in the band want/need/no, DEMAND to see <g>.

The copy machine?

Well, it makes the chart handed to the musician look a bit more finished and not something covered with whiteout corrections.

Presentation is a large part of the game, it seems, many musicians are rather emotional concerning such issues, it seems. So I try to head 'em off at the pass...

Page 48. I don't have that book, so I can't see the context for this chord.

The best workaround I've yet found for this chord is Ab7#9/C (for CmMaj7b5)
Most of the time the unwanted root isn't played and even when the 5th of the Ab7#9 is occasionally missing the embellishments are still within the W/H diminished scale from which the mMaj7b5 chord originates.

This workaround voicing also short-circuits most of the problems using m#5 or maj chords when riff voicings are played that emphasise the parent diatonic major or minor scale.

The mMaj7b5 chord is very necessary for a lot of modern tunes by Richie Beirach and David Leibman who use it extensively throughout their repertoire. Not that many here will be bothered one way or another, but it should be added IMO

Hope this helps

Alan

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
