I am trying to create 4 part harmony parts for a singing group. I am aware that I can create the harmony parts but I would like to write the parts separately to each one of the tracks so that I can send them by email to the singers to practice their parts with the accompaniment. Does anyone know how to do this?

Hi Linda,

Welcome to the forums

If you're using midi harmony, one way to do what you're after is to create your song in BIAB and then save it as a midi file using "Make Standard Midi File" found under the "File" menu. When the midi file dialogue box pops up, click on "Options" and select "Midi file harmony on separate tracks". Once the midi file is created, this can be loaded into music notation software and the parts will be on different music staves. MuseScore is a freeware music notation program that would do the job.

If you look up "Standard midi file - making" in Help, it will give you more of an explanation.

Regards,
Noel

I agree that transferring a BB-created midi into a notation program is probably the best way. Except that for an instrumentalist part (rather than a vocal group part), I like to have the chords shown and that means entering them into the notation program. Therefore, as a suggested alternative, using only BB, use the 'Harmony' pull down menu and select "Convert Harmony to Melody Track" (or Soloist track if you like). Then make four file copies of the Song file. To create each part, delete the notes that you do not want. It is a bit long winded, depending on how fast you are with a mouse, but it works. I use it often to create harmony parts for my small jazz group. I then freeze the tracks to be on the safe side, although the program keeps telling me I don't need to do that. Also for the playback of each part (practicing or whatever), make sure you have turned off the Melody harmony function.

There is probably a better way to do this by using RealBand. I seem to remember that was the last suggestion I saw on this forum in answer to this question. I am sure someone will be able to tell us how.

Maybe there is even a way to print out the individual parts in Band-in-a-Box. It always seems to me that there should be a way of doing this. Pretty please!

I just did a quick experiment using the Melody, Convert Harmony to Melody Track as mentioned by Graham. Then I saved the song and opened it in MuseScore, and I had the four part harmony all on different staves. Maybe this would be sufficient.

Note: as Noel mentioned, I always have the "Options" for saving MIDI set to "Midi file harmony on separate tracks". I don't know if this is required or even relevant to importing the BIAB song into MuseScore - I would guess it is not.

From the Band in a Box FAQs page:

Quote:

156. How do I print harmony parts with Band-in-a-Box?

You first need to 'convert the harmony' to the Melody track (or Soloist track if you are using a Soloist/Thru harmony). This will write the harmony permanently to the track so that you can see the notation. To do this, you can go to the Harmony menu and select Convert harmony to .. Track. In Band-in-a-Box versions 12 and higher, there is a feature that allows you to display and print individual harmony parts. Here are the basic steps. After you have chosen the MIDI harmony you wish to use:

Open the Lead Sheet window and click the OPT button to open the Lead Sheet Options dialog.

Press the [Convert Harmony to Track] button.

Choose the harmony part you would like to view/print, from the 'Show Harmony Voice' pull-down menu.

Press the [Print] button in the Lead Sheet window to print out that part.

Band-in-a-Box 11 and earlier do not have the ability to print individual harmony voices separately, however one thing you could do would be to save your song as a MIDI file (making sure that 'MIDI File Harmony on Separate Tracks' is checked in the MIDI File Options dialog), then import the MIDI file into PowerTracks Pro Audio and print it each track separately from that program.

Once you have converted harmony parts to melody, you can choose which part to display/print via the "Show Harmony VOICE" selection of the Leadsheet Notation window. You can then print them individually. I do this all the time, and transpose them for C, Bb or Eb horns..

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
