Nice.

Some of us ol' coots remember the 1956 recording by Julie London. No fiddle pickers, muted trumper picker, or full orchestra. Just guitar and acoustic bass - and Julie.

I'll bet even Mac remembers hearing this tune, back when his mama held him up to the gas radio.

Two great recordings of the same great song.

Thanks for the post!

A wee slip of the keyboard there.

Check out Susan Boyle on YouTube, she sprang to life in a British TV show a week or so ago. That went 'viral'.

The song you posted is one of a number she's done since then. All in 2009.

The intro to the talent show shows a middle age frumpy looking woman in a sort of so you can sing show and how she wows the judges. Worth going and looking for that, and she sang acapella on Larry King the other day, saw it on the tele.

Sorry, John -- he is right -- 1999.

The "Cry Me a River" cut was included in a 1999 compilation CD, and maybe nobody heard it. The Brit who made the CD was interviewed this week, expressing regret that he hadn't saved the audition tape she had submitted.

Very, very nice.
Better than her TV clip of the Les Miz IMHO.
She was flat on a few notes and sounded amateurish in parts on that one.
Maybe was nervous being on TV.

My favorite "Cry Me A River" is still Joe Cocker's live version on Mad Dogs.

So much for using youtube's dates for veracity.

You likely glimpsed the date the video was posted.

To the right is the memo area, which says:

"...From a charity cd made in 1999 of which only 1000 copies were made. "

I don't know much about Joe Cocker, but I am old enough to remember Julie London.

Speaking of guitar -- that was the great Barney Kessel on guitar backing up Julie London.

Kessel is one of my all time favorites.

I learned a graduate-level amount of guitar from transcribin' Barney's famous work on the early Jimmy Smith recordings.

And I remember a time that if you couldn't play Kessel's version of All Blues, you couldn't get a gig...

On the competition show she sounded great, and like someone who had practiced and learned on her own. Great job. Then on Cry Me a River, she sounded very schooled and polished, very well trained. Best not to think about it too much I guess, just enjoy it.

By the way...

Since this tune seems to bring back some memories, does anyone remember who played bass on the Julie London recording?

I vaguely recall reading (years ago) that it was Ray Brown. But then again, maybe I'm just makin' that up.

Jon:

It was Ray Leatherwood on that Julie London hit track, altho Kessel did many recordings with Ray Brown.

And Mac, don't sweat the "senior moments." More than likely those moments are residuals of hanging with the "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" crowd in those smoky days, know what I mean?

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
