I'm working on a country ballad in 4/4 time and would like to start the ballad with all but 1 instruments muted. I'd like for all instruments to be muted for the first quarter-note of the first measure and for the bass to do a three note progression of G - A - B on quarter notes 2, 3 & 4. Then all instruments will begin playing in the chord of C on the first note of measure two.
I've tried adding additional measures and having the instruments play and then mute but i seems as if it's either all the measure or nothing with measure muting.

Hi Jim, Your observation regarding BIAB in that either a whole measure is muted or nothing is muted is correct. Here are some solutions that I can think of ... ONERealband would make the process very easy to accomplish. It works the same as BIAB but because it's a DAW, it would be possible to simply edit the offending note or beat and to cut it out of the generated wav file that's created for the bass track. TWO- In BIAB, use a MIDI-based (or Supertrack) bass.
- Set up the song so that the initial bar for the bass is not muted but all other tracks are. (This will generate a bar full of bass.)
- Once the song is generated, use the Notation Editor mode or Piano Roll mode to adjust/remove the bass notes in the bass-solo bar. (This control over note-length and note-pitch is one of the big advantages of using MIDI rather than Realtracks.)
- When the bass track is as you'd like it to be, Freeze the track. This will stop it changing whenever the song is regenerated.
NOTE: Freezing is only available in later versions of BIAB. THREE- Setup BIAB with a 4/4 style.
- Set the first bar to 1/4 and mute everything.
- Now the second bar to 3/4 and mute everything except the bass.
- Lastly, set the third bar to 4/4 and unmute everything.
Hope these thoughts give you some ideas, Noel

Then all instruments will begin playing in the chord of C on the first note of measure two. I wouldn't use the Mute settings to do this in BB. It can be done using Bar Settings and the "Rest All but" command. I would enter four chords into the first bar. |C,G Am, G/B| Then I'd invoke Bar Settings such that the first beat chord was a Rest All Instruments, the 2nd beat chord Rest All but Bass and the succeeding two chords the same as for beat 2. The SHOT command in the same window may also work, again resting all but the bass. --Mac

Mac:
I assumed you mean the F5, or right click sub menu, bar settings selection where the left hand side of the screen says it is for instrument changes? I thought of that however when I tried to set it I found Instrument settings are for the measure and can not be set on a note-by-note basis.
I did a search on the term "rest all instruments" and believe you mean the ALT-F5, Chord Options dialog, correct?
Thanks for your suggestion. I tried it and it worked!

Hi Jim, Your interpretation of Mac's post is correct. I'll add some graphics for his approach just in case others find the information useful. It's a very clever solution and others might not be aware of the power of these settings. 1. Right-click on the chord sheet and choose "Chord Settings". 2. Once in Chord Settings ... - Select the desired beat. (#1)
- Enter the chord. (#2)
- Select how you want the chord to play. (#3)
- Select which instrument(s) to play. (#4)
Regards, Noel

. Thats a great trick. I had never used the 'Chord Options' commands before. All this time I have been entering rests, shots and holds the hard way.

I typed, "bar settings" and was thinking "chord settings". Sorry for that.
Noel comes to the rescue, complete with screengrabs. That's awesome.

Noel96 & Mac:
Thank you both for your responses. As with many things, there's more than one way to perform a task.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
