I decided to time how long it takes to boot up my "music workstation" computer.
I started from the time I turned on the power bar.
Then turned on the computer, opened up BIAB and selected the first song (admittedly a small one) on the list under the File menu, and displayed it.

Total time, one minute and 32 seconds.

If I were to have guessed, I would have said much longer.
Don't know why I should be in such a rush.
I'm retired and usually have nothing better to do <grin>

Is the computer doing a full (cold) boot, or starting up from sleep, hibernate, or (?)

Loading a tune ready to play in 1.5 minutes from a cold boot (including launching the program) would be pretty impressive.

Yes, it's from a cold boot, completely powered down.
The PC is several years old, running Windows Home Premium 7.
Not hooked to the internet.

Sorry!

XP not connected to the internet?
That helps .. still a nice boot time. 20-30 seconds can be obtained with a basic boot, but to then have BiaB open and ready, I think that's a pretty nice 'ready to go' time.

That said, XP is reaching it's expiration date, so you may want to see if it would run Win7 or not.

For XP, that is darn fast boot time.

Likely because, not being connected to the internet, you are not running any of the updates to XP. That can have consequences, too, but if everything is running okay, don't fix it.

You can run a Windows program called msconfig and see what is autoloading at boot time, or this excellent program, Winpatrol will allow you to delay auto-boot programs which are not critical at startup, but nice to have. It also notifies you of programs attempting to install. It has found a few nasty things that got through my antivirus,, http://www.winpatrol.com/

The single most effective hardware changeout to decrease Boot Times that I've experienced is the installation of Solid State drive for the c: drive.

Those using he machine for music making and multitracking endeavors should also install a separate standard disk drive in the machine and learn how to direct their disk streaming writes, etc. to that disk, as Solid State drives don't like being written and overwritten all the time. This is an easy task for the person installing the newer Solid State drive in an older machine to upgrade it, for in most cases you will have the original hard disk available. Clone it to the Solid State drive, ascretain that your machine boots up ad runs properly on the new solid state drive, install the old hard drie as the next logical hard drive in the system and wipe it clean.

Host recording and music making programs typically have settings inside them where you can direct the disk streaming of audio to that second drive.

I thought my computer had a fast start, but that time was incredible.
I too run XP with no internet access and timed mine last night, from pressing the button on the computer's case to having a song loaded and ready to go in BIAB. 2 mins 25 seconds.

can't recall the last time I intentionally turned my computer off so "start up" is always pretty quick!

Alyn: is the song you're loading a "regular" one or does it have RealTracks?

The one I timed is "regular", is 21 bars long and is 3 kb in size.

John: My "studio" (a small converted bedroom) typically has 3 PCs available and/or running: My aforementioned "music workstation" (see below), the PC I'm typing this message on (a 4-5 year-old HP Media Center PC) and an ASUS EP121 Tablet.

I shut them ALL down every night. I don't turn on the DAW unless I need it, same as the tablet. If there happens to be a particularly nasty thunderstorm, I'll shut them all down and unplug them from the wall (no surge protectors, only power bars).

I looked up the specs for the DAW:
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
- 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
- Processor: x86 Family 15 Model 6 Stepping 5 GenuineIntel ~3417 Mhz
- BIAS Version Date: Award Software International, Inc, F1, 8/29/2006
- SMBIOS Version: 2.3
- Total Physical Memory: 2,048.00 MB
- Available Physical Memory: 1.58 GB
- Total Virtual Memory: 2.00 GB
- Available Virtual Memory: 1.96 GB
- Page File Space: 3.85 GB

(only some of that means anything to me <grin>)

I had the unit "built" by an independent dealer here in Calgary.
I had him add a SB Live! card and an Audio2496 card. Otherwise, it's pretty much "stock"

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
