Hi There,

Im a vocalist and sing mostly by ear, so you will have to excuse my lack of chord knowledge.

During this process of entering chords from existing sheet music to create sheet music on BIAB so that I can transpose, Ive run into a big "augment" snag. BIAB recongizes "Caug" but nothing else like Aaug7, Eaug7, Gaug9 or Bbaug7. Those that I have listed previously, are examples of some of the augment chords I have run into. So I am looking for an all around solution to my problem and not just solutions to those individual examples I have given above.

So does anyone have suggestions of how to get around this snag? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Shannon

Click Help in BIAB - Index - type in chord list - double click on chord list and all the augmented chords will have aug or a + sign. Later, Ray

You may also find chords with #5 in the chord name, rather than aug.

Hi Shannon,

Fake Chords and their various ways of stating them have never been standardized, so one book may call a chord one way and another book may refer to the same chord as something that is called differently but is actually the same thing.

For Caug7 in BB you can simply type, "C735" and get "C7(#5)" when you hit Enter.

OR, you can type, "C7+" and it will appear as "C7+" on the chord sheet as well.

Both of the above play the exact same chord, the Caug7.

Hi Mac,

Thanks for the detailed help in clarifying. To make sure I am on the same page as you, examples are: as written on sheet music-Bbaug7 or Bb735 is equal to Bb7+ OR Bb7#5 OR G735 correct? And so if on the sheet music, it says, Gaug9 is equal to G9+ OR G9#5 OR G935, correct?

If I may ask another question, what is a small "o" in G3o7 or Bbo7 mean? This chord also doesn't enter in biab.

The small o means diminished. Type "dim". Example: Bbdim or G#dim

In BIAB, in most styles, a dim chord will sound as a dim7 chord.

There is more to this topic, if you need details. It would probably be better to use the BIAB forum, rather than this Woodshedding one.

Also, when in Mac's post he uses 3, that is meant as a way BIAB enters #. BIAB understands that typing a 3 in this context means the symbol of the shift+3, or a sharp sign, is requested.

All of the info in this thread is no secret. It's all in the manual. Just look in the Help heading in BIAB. The answers to the majority of questions in the forum can be found in the manual. If you want a hard copy of the manual, you can probably call PG Music and order one. Later, Ray

Thanks guys, for your help. Again, I so appreciate this. I have a hard copy of the manual. I have been using both the manual and the online help inside BIAB. Ive looked and looked all over for these answers and haven't found it yet.

PS: I overlooked BIAB forum, I see it now. Thanks for the tip!

Hi Shannon. BIAB assumes that one has at least a rudimentary knowledge of harmony and chord structure. That's why there's no explanation of what comprises say a C7+ chord. The majority of people who use BIAB and are successful with it have that rudimentary knowledge. This is not to drive you away from BIAB, rather to encourage you to learn as much as you can about music theory. Check out the above site for beginning chord structure, read the manual and keep asking questions. Later, Ray

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
