I use a synth that has some custom patches that I want to define in RB. After reading the PATCHES.INI file in the RB directory, it seemed pretty easy. After adding patches to a section, my synth shows up in the Patch Select dialog dropdown but none of my patches I defined show. Here is a section out of my custom patches.
[Kawai MP5]
1,95,16=Concert Grand 54,95,2=Jazz Ensemble 54,121,0=Pop Ensemble 54,95,10=Contemp Ensemble
Can anyone shed some light on what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks Rachael

Would be a lot easier to search the web for an existing Cakewalk patchmap for your synth, then use the Action -> Convert Patch Map from BIAB or Cakewalk command to make it work...

IIRC, even though I did what Mac suggests when I set up mine, I had to fiddle with the ini file before it compiled without error. From your post, it appears the ini does compile without error, but that the definitions just don't display. Your example shows a discontiguous MSB (95). Long shot guess: The compiler may expect all entries for a given bank to be contiguous. Perhaps it also expects them (MSB & LSB) in increasing order. (And the ini file does state that for a given bank the patches must be in increasing order.) Also, even though the ini documentation implies that explicit bank headings are unnecessary for this format, I used them with no detriment. So you might try:
(Bank 95) (BanklSB 2) 54,95,2=Jazz Ensemble (BankLSB 10) 54,95,10=Contemp Ensemble (BankLSB 16) 1,95,16=Concert Grand (Bank 121) (BankLSB 0) 54,121,0=Pop Ensemble
However, since I've suggested that the LSBs be placed in increasing order, there's no first entry with a slot 1 definition, and the ini documentation does state that the first patch must be 0 or 1 (to define which system, 0-127 or 1-128, is used). So you may want to either add a dummy patch 1 or try the forceonebased command (illustrated in the ini file but commented out).
Hope some combination of these suggestions work. -Ron

Thanks for the detailed response. I used the patch file that I have been using in BIAB for my synth. The Action|Convert Patch List did compile my patch file fine with no errors. You're right, the actual instrument patches don't show when I choose the patch list for my synth.
I tried putting only one patch into the RB .INI file and have still have the problem. I suspect it is the format (x.xxx.xxx) that is causing the problem. I'll tinker with the (Bank) format and see if I can get it working.
Again, thanks all
Rachael

In the Select Patch dialog, my synth shows up in the Patch List dropdown box. Below it it has (None) in the larger box where the patches usually are. To the right under Variations it shows <No Bank Changes>. If I knew how to post a screen shot, it would be easier.
Thanks, R

It may be that you chose to edit the existing .ini file rather than drop in a new one.
Try this.
Close the program down completely.
Locate the Patches.ini file in the folder.
Copy it to somewhere else like the desktop temporarily.
Change its name (perhaps to the name of your synth.ini)
Change the name of the patches.ini inside the host program folder (to something like "patchesold.ini".
Drop the copied and renamed file into the host program folder.
Start the program. You should be greeted by some messages that show that the .ini was installed correctly.
This *may* rewrite and refresh that list for you.

Mac, Rachael, in my experience, all you need do is edit the patches.ini file in a text editor (with RB closed). When you start RB, it "knows" (don't ask me how ) that the file was changed, and so it compiles it to patches.bin. You get a message that patches.ini was successfully converted to patches.bin. Or you get an error message if there's something RB didn't like about the ini file's formatting. Patches.bin is the actual data source for the patch select dialog. So if Rachael is generating patches.bin without an error, then there's just something about the patches order or format causing the RB compiler to stop short. It correctly recognizes the synth, but then doesn't "see" the patches. In that one-patch test, make sure the patch number was either 1 or 0. And the instruments from the original default ini file are showing correctly, right? Just keep dinking with that text editor, eventually it'll compile correctly. But you do have to close and restart RB each time you make a change. -Ron Incidentally, FWIW, I got tired of not knowing the bank number (LSB in my case) for my patches, so I rewrote the list making that number the first character of the patch name. Then I use the Select Patch dialog with the "always show bank 0 names" switch disabled.

Rachael, The same thing applies to PowerTracks Pro Audio or Real Band. http://www.catsmeowcafe.com/patchesini.htmGary

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
