I've downloaded some midi files, but I didn't know what keys they were in. I've opened them up in BIAB and PT and the pgm showed they were in the key of C. However, when I tried to play them in that key, I discovered they were in other keys. I'm assuming that neither biab or pt can determine the key of an imported mini file--is this correct?

Correct. The default is C.
However, you could render them to audio and then run them through the ACW which can tell you what key they are in

Thanks Sam. I wanted to confirm what I thought. We can pick at the keyboard and figure the key out while it's playing, but I was looking for a lazy way out. One other way, that works fairly well, is to use the midi drop down window, via the green seq. button, and remove the check mark in selected "show" boxes and then see what the lead sheet window shows. Pickin at the keyboard doesn't take very long though.

That is a typical problem with many free downloaded MIDI files.
Folks don't program in the right key signature when they create the files, they just wade right in and the default key signature for all MIDI sequencers is the key of C. So they play in another key or step enter in another key, leaving the key sig wrong.
Usually, one can take a look of listen to the very last note of most songs, especially the bass track's last note, it will be the Key of the song.

Find the last note in the bass and try to match it with whatever instrument you've got handy. Even if the instrument is one or two octaves higher in pitch wouldn't matter. Find the last note and you've found the key signature in the vast majority of cases.
If no instrument, use the Notation view and look at the last note in the Bass part.

Aha, another neat little tip. Many thanks for that one, Mac.

Also you an tell if there are a lot of consistant accidentals. For example, if every single B is flatted, it's probably in F, not C. If it ends on F, that pretty much cinches it. I have hardcopy books like this. The Parker Omnibook has a lot of songs with the wrong key sig.

HappyTrails that's what we've been doing in the past....just hunting and pecking on the piano. It's a lot easier of you have good/perfect pitch hearing though

I don't have perfect pitch, I just look at the notation. Mac is right about the last note, or chord being the key. 99% of the time that's it.
Not sure about PT but in BB I'll change the key but answer "no" to transposing to fix this.

The same basic popup happens when you change keysig in PTW or RealBand, too.
One problem is that some users get confused about whether to answer, "Yes" or "No" when prompted to allow the program to change the notation or not.
If you are trying to correct a MIDI file that has the wrong key signature imbedded in it, typically the key of C, which is the default for all MIDI sequencers I've seen, but the song is actually in another key, after you find the proper key, use the transposition dropdown, select the chosen key signature and then when the window prompts, Just Say NO to the prompt that wants to change the notation.
From that point onward, if you then wish to change the keysignature to another key, say to bring the song into range for your voice or perhaps to make it easier to play on your instrument, when you go to change the key again -- say yes to that same prompt.
Coincidentally, had a phone call late yesterday evening from a studio guy who got all wound up in that exact same problem. Easy troubleshoot and fix for me, but that is after years of being the MIDIOT at this end.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
