As I have promissed in an earlyer thread regarding vocal harmony gear I finally put my money wher my mouth is
This is a cover of Be my day by the Cats (1974 ) The backingtrack I used was originally a MIDI-track which was allready rendered to MP3.
I recorded the vocals in one run (after several testruns to determin the harmonie-settings) and at the same time the harmonies using the TC VoiceLive 2. Still trying to work properly with the box, so a couple of the harmony-parts start a little sudden.

Please have a listen and let me know if you think the harmonies are "believable" or if they need some more tweeking.

Click here to have a listen. .

Enjoy

Very nice Mike. Harmonies sound great brother !!

Pretty believable to me. If they were panned separately, no one would notice they were from TC. They sound monophonic in the mix. Give em a stereo separation and no one would tell the difference, IMO.

They sound super !!

Ouch!!! Whattamistaketamake.

Every single voice can be panned seperatly on the TC......but I didn't think of it when creating this setting

Thanks for the feedback, Trax.

WOW Mike. I am a purist when it comes to harmonies. But THAT is impressive.
(Fun song too.)

Thanks for sharing.

Mike,

Thanks for sharing - I've been doing a little research on these units and it is sure good to have an example of what it can do.
Sounds good to me already - can't imagine what it will sound like once you get better acquainted with the settings.

Great vox with super harmonies.

This is good enough to be an add for TC.

PS- outstanding backing tracks as well.

Really enjoyed this too Mike.
The harmonies work well, but I enjoyed the parts where it's just your great lead voice just as much!

Hi, Mike:

Dynamite arrangement with a dynamite vocal. Caribbean in the Netherlands -- I love it!!

The harmonies sound so good, I wonder if you could help shed a little light on what you have learned in shopping for and in using this unit, the TC VoiceLive 2?

More specifically, did you look at and try out the cheaper units, such as TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-M ($300), and the DigiTech Vocalist Live 4 Vocal Harmony Processor ($450)?

Is your new unit clearly superior to these others? And are all the hardware units clearly superior to the BB built-in TC Helicon?

Thanks for any guidance.

Brad

Liked it Mike. Good on ya. Liked the harmonies.

In answer to Brad's question. Yes the hardware machines are much better than the software versions. Each voice sounds much more realistic. The TCHelicon is great too tho'. And probably gets better with each edition.

Again Mike. Good job on that.

Thanks for the listen and comments

@Brad: The reason I was looking for a hardware vocal harmoniser was to replace the voice we lost when our previous drummer quit the band. At the same time I was looking for a hardware fx-processor to use with the DAW. Importand for me where:
1: unit has to be usable on stage: so no software solution and no 19" rackmounted device.
2: unit has to be able to be "believable" on stage: no robottic sounds
3: unit has to be versatile: I wanted to use it as an fx-processor in my home-studio
4: Since we have no single instrument in the band to feed the lead-input for key-recognition, the unit had to be able to "swallow" whatever music was presented to it in order to determin the right key.

The VoiceLive 2 was the only unit that could do all the tasks. I also tried the Harmony-G (which takes guitarinput to determin the key) and the Digitech VoiceLive 4. These units sound great too. There is a difference in quality of the created harmonies. These differences are however not all too obvious when using the units live on stage. Also there are differences in the number of fx you can use. For example the VoiceLive 2 has a doubling function you can use aside from the 4-part harmonies you can create. The choir-function doubles the harmonyparts thus creating a real choir-sound.

Conclusion: when you want to use a unit to create harmonies live on stage and you are using a guitar or a MIDI-keyboard you can use any of the mentioned boxes (try them all before deciding: sound and feel are very personal!!!)
When you want to use the unit for recording and you want the best sounding canned harmonies available at this moment you'll want the VoiceLive 2.

It might be fun to do some real unbiassed double blind testing on this site: We'll gather some people that own a vocal harmoniser and use one single voice, sung over a BiaB arrangement to provide the vocal input. We'll post only the harmonie-parts as a mp3 on a site (I can spare some webspace). Ofcourse the mp3's will only be named "test-1" "test-2" etc. We'll let everybody decide which sounded best for him/her and then, after one or two weeks we'll put the names of the units with the mp3's.

So people who own a hardware harmoniser and interested in this experiment, give me a pm and we'll work something out.

Mike:

Thanks so much for your authoritative response.

I will not be using the unit live, so am interested primarily in any opinion as to whether the HW units are a lot better than the PG/TC software. Russ seems to think so, but your idea of comparative testing is a good one. I would be most interested in the comparative quality of the cheaper unit, the harmony-M.

I have a very old original Digitech Vocalist, which works but has long been superceded.

Meanwhile, learning to use the built-in TC Helicon is still a work in progress, and I might not need to buy anything else, especially since I can now use the Helicon with RealBand.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
