I recently upgraded to 2010. I have been a user of Band in The Box for the last couple of years. I have primarily used it a tool to learn new tunes and also to print out sheet music. I purchased 2010 with the intention of broadening my use of the program, especially "Real Band." At this point I'm a bit overwhelemed and have been reading the user's guide, but still confused. Please forgive my ignorance with this question. Should I be using BIAB to open Real Tracks files? Should I be using both Real Band or some combination or BIAB and Real Band? Can someone point me to video tutorials that will help answer these questions? Thank you in advance.

Steveo

There are no set rules. They both have there features and can complement each other. Experiment. One example is RB does not do multi styles. You have to first do the tune in BIAB and then D&D to RB.

Noel and John, Thank you for the tips. I am unclear on a few things. .My biggest hurdle right now and I'm very unclear on this, I use an arranger keyboard from Yamaha, with BIAB( not real tracks) I'm able to pull up any song I want via BIAB and play it thur the keyboards system. I cannot get this to work with BIAB ( using Windows 7). Is it possible to play the Real Tracks WMA files thru the keyboard or am I mis-interpeting??

RealTracks are Audio files and cannot play a MIDI hardware synthesizer.

Remember this mantra: Midi is not audio, audio is not midi.
Two questions here, the first one the answer is if it worked before, it should work now in Win 7. The only problem I've heard about with Win 7 is if it's 64 bit or not. Some soundcards don't have 64 bit drivers but you're using an external hardware synth so that should be no problem. Just check your configuration and routing, if you still need help with that post the details of your computer setup, a lot of people here are using Win 7 with no problems.
As to the second question, if your Yamaha is one of the newer ones that sells for say $1,000 or more then yes, it will play audio files. I know they load and play MP3's whether or not they play WMA or Wav, I don't know but it's easy enough to mix your Real Tracks down to a stereo file and convert it to MP3. You have to read the manual that came with your keyboard but what it should allow you to do is to mix the audio playback with the arranger functions. It could even mix the audio playback of the MP3, the midi playback of your Biab midi file plus you playing it live. That's what my Korg Pa1X does.
Keep in mind, the audio part can't be changed while the midi can. By that I mean once you've mixed the RT's down and loaded them into the keyboard, you can't do looping, key changes, tempo changes etc. A pure midi file you can. One's audio, one's midi, that's the mantra.

Bob,

Thanks for the explanation.

Here's what I'm using Yamaha S910 arranger, it's a mid-level board that can record in .wav and also playback both the .wav and mp3 files.

This has become my main board, but until recently I have used and still do use to a lesser degree a Korg Pa2xPro. I have not tried the Real Tracks Config with the Pa2xPro yet.

I'm out of time this weekend, but I need to pull out my old laptop with Windows XP and run it there and see what kind of results I get. I"m running Win 7-32-bit on a Boot Camp partition on a Mac Book Pro. BIAB works just fine.

I'm still "green" with Real Tracks so that leads me to another question, something I'm having trouble getting a clear concept of and I may or may not be missing the point of Real Tracks. Can I substitute my own chords for the Real Tracks for songs I want to play/perform? I was under the impression that that's the point of Real Tracks, but I have to say I'm confused as to whether that can be done??

Yep-
You can change the chords
But once you change the chords you have to re-generate any realtacks..

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
