Hey,

I am new to this amazing software and everything looks terrifying to me. But what I want is simple, but yet I can't find in this program that I could find in others: how do I remove instruments, for example drums or piano, while playing a .MIDI file from a song I found off the internet?

Thanks.

When you load a MIDI file, BiaB should automatically disable the Style.

This is confirmed when the Style name in the Style window, below the Songtitle window, has an 'X' in front of it.

If you inadvertently enabled the Style somehow and now don't want it to play along with the MIDI, simply RightClick on the Style name window and choose, "Disable.."

Welcome.

Hit the SEQ button on the tool bar, midmainscreen, right side. Choose "sequencer on melody track." If by "remove" you mean "silence" just untick the channels you don't want to hear. If you mean literally delete the data on those channels, hit the appropriate button(s) in the edit column and choose delete.

Keep in mind that the ability of BB to play/edit midi files like this is a peripheral function. The core functionality is... well to be a band in a box.

Have fun, -Ron

EDIT - My post crossed Mac's. Two interpretations of the question. Take yer pick

OK, thanks Mac for the reply...

Here's the thing... I am a guitar player and all I want is to have a backing track for my guitar playing... perhaps some drums and bass running in the background to accompany me.... so does that mean I can for example load up an MP3 file on BiaB and it can play some drums and bass according to the music that's been played in the loaded MP3 file?

An mp3 file is not a MIDI file. It is audio and all instruments on the file are "together" in that audio file.

BiaB cannot separate those out for you.

BTW, using Band in a Box in this fashion really defeats the purpose. My suggestion is to find a folder in the band in a box files that says FOLK. Under this are Irish, Scottish, English, and Children's folders. Find a song you know and like. Play it. Change the key, play it. Check the tempo, the time sig, and press the style button and go find a country style for it. Play that.

Figure out how to right click an instrument at the top, remembering the tempo, and go find yourself a fiddle or harmonica with a close tempo. Play it. Change volumes on the tracks. Right click on the buttons at the top to mute the thing.

Then go into the Styles file and find the 'example' for each style. Load that and listen and watch. Change the key, mute the guitar and strum along.

You'll soon fine out the last thing you want to do is use it to play someone's midi file from the internet.

You can also find all sorts of predone band in a box files using google. Just type in "Band in a Box songs" and go hunting.

Good Luck

If you are not using a VSTi/DXi synth plugin, then audio tracks are not always automatically in sync with MIDI tracks. There are settings to adjust this, but you might try a DXi synth first. In the Opt.| MIDI Driver Setup dialog, check the Use DXi Synth checkbox and select the VSC-DXi in the top plugin slot (the VSC would have been installed with Band-in-a-Box as long as your operating system is 32-bit.). If you have a non-DXi synth that you would prefer to use, then you might need to adjust the Driver Latency setting in the MIDI Driver Setup, or the Audio Latency setting in the Audio Settings window.

VSTi/DXi

Man... this is what I needed... the sound is much better and in synch now thanks!!!

Ohh... i have one more question here.... okay let's suppose i leave out the MIDI stuff for now and want to use BiaB to go along with my guitar playing... the thing is that i have been watching some videos on youtube and it appears that it can play REAL INSTRUMENTS instead of crappy MIDI sounds... but the thing is...i can't make it play like that... all I can hear are crappy MIDI sounds... except for the drums, that i have managed to get a realdrums package but thats it...

like this video below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwfDG7NWQ0E&feature=related&fmt=18

i have done (or tried) do everything this video says to do...the video says it's using realstyles... all i have installed here is styles with realtracks... i'm using BiaB Version 2008 (257) and i'm going maaaaad... :P

I may be wrong, but I don't think Real Tracks were available in version 2008, only real drums. You may need to upgrade to be able to use real tracks.

Today you would really want to update to the current version, BiaB 2010.

The PGMusic main sales page will tell you the upgrade packages and their pricing.

The latest version ships as a very small usb hard drive. Actually I use the Ketron SD2 midi device which PG music sells from the store on the website here.

The Dxi synth sounds ok though. The best way to deal with this is to bite the bullet, get everything, and then update it at least once a year. Great things keep on happening and I'm sure it will continue.

And it is very hard for people here who are almost all running the current version, to provide help to others...

BB2009 has RealTracks capability.

You would likely not be able to use the Shots and Holds feature with RealTracks and that version.

OK. Thanks guys.

You guys were very helpful and I appreciate that. BiaB is definitely a superb program and I'll certainly do everything I can to keep-up with the yearly updates - it's hard due to money problems

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
