'' I have always found the at type of sequencer really productive ''

this freaking keyboard plays up.

I meant ' that type of sequencer'

the 'at' type of sequencer must be some innovative one that we have not yet heard of....

Maybe it ran on the old IBM AT.

And handled a whopping 16 tracks of very cheezy MIDI via DOS commands...

Alan, I agree about using a very good synth with BB, infact I hope to understand how I can setup my Kontakt 3 with the program. I could use some really nice sax patches for the 'thru' channel.

It's a good thought but that will frustrate you too. The problem is all of those big sampler programs like Kontakt, Sampletank etc, are not GM compatible. That means that on one hand yes you can set them up to work with Biab but you have to go in and assign each midi instrument every time you want to do a different song or make changes to an existing one. That gets old real fast. A basic GM synth like the VSC, Forte or a hardware module like the Ketron are true plug and play. Whatever instruments Biab wants to use are called up instantly, no problem. This is where the old Catch 22 comes in, live with the GM sounds or spend an inordinate amount of time setting up a nice sampler for each tune manually.
The other thing is Biab only has one midi output port so you can only use one synth at a time. You can't for example use the Forte for the backing band but use Kontakt for the sax soloist. That is one of the big reasons Real Band was developed. 32 midi output ports plus it does almost everything Biab does.

hi Jazzmammal, yes I see what you mean about Kontakt and no GM compatibility. I remember I started investigating this a few years ago with Kontakt 2 and then gave up.....as you said, it was frustrating and I gave up. This tech stuff can really suck all your music time if not careful, as you well know

I also have a killer sounding sample library from Eastwest called Goliath, it apparently has a GM bank but it's still not GM compatible , so what's the use.....unless it's GM compatible, using that with BB would be very impractical and time consuming.

The single midi port in BB is really not enough, but thanks for the suggestion about Realband, I did not know about this difference about the midi ports and I think I could put RB to good use.

Check out RB for sure, it's my main go to program now. When I said it does almost what Biab does, that's true. As far as loading a song or creating a new Biab song, it works exactly the same. What's missing are the midi soloists (the Real Tracks soloists work fine), the soundtrack and the ability to put in 1st/2nd endings, tags, coda's etc to create a fake book type chart. Still, for pure music creating it's identical to Biab with 48 tracks, all the midi output ports, much better midi/audio editing and mastering.

I'll definitely start using Realband. I did check out the very first versions a while ago but I did run into a problem and didn't take my time with it. The one that comes with BB 2010 seems much improved overall. The idea to have a BB with a nice 16 track sequencer is really what I am looking for. Thanks

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
