Yep, floyd is playing lead guitar! This is a current mix with different drums, new fx and new mastering of the eight year old original. We’ve done 101 (really) collabs with floyd over the last 11 years and this is the only one with him soloing. We originally sent it to him for an opinion on the mix and back it comes with a solo! He did a great job supporting the stark arrangement and dark mood of the lyric and Janice’s vocal. So thank you Sticky Fingers - the blues name we gave him at the time. smile And thank y’all for the time to hopefully listen and comment. Oh, and, yes, we know the tune does not resolve on the root chord smile - we felt it added to the unresolved theme of the lyric.

Vocal: Rodes NT1 mic > Blue Icicle interface > Izotope Nectar > Logic Pro

Solo Guitar: Fender Stratocaster DI > Scarlett interface > Waves GTR3

Bass: RealTrack 564 Bass, Electric, Blues Monday Sw 065 > Waves Bass Rider > Neutron 3

Drums: RealDrums BluesRock128 > Waves CLA Drums

Guitar Rhythm: RealTrack 565: Electric, Rhythm Blues Monday Sw 065 > 140 EMT Plate Reverb sim

Mastering: Ozone Dynamic EQ > Ozone Vintage EQ > Ozone imager > Ozone Maximizer > Ozone Tonal Balance > Logic Prox X Loudness Meter

I've been suffocating in this dank bottom land

There's never a leaf moving in the bottom land

The heat's been pressin' me down like God's own hand

I dreamed it's different over Jerusalem ridge

I've heard tales of peace beyond the ridge

Family says you ain't leaving, this is your heritage

Five generations have left nothing to call my own

Blood feuds and murder, nothing to call my own

Less I count seven sunken graves with one field stone

I could wake up and walk off the land tomorrow

Head down the road, stick out a thumb tomorrow

Nothing here but a trailer and a row too long to hoe

Hi Guys,

This right up my alley - cool blues with excellent vocals.

I know I go on about this (a lot) but I think the lead guitar could be up in volume by 2Db in the brief solo and 1 Db in the fills. Plus I would fade him out during the vocals. It is tidy playing and needs featuring.

Best Regards
Nigel

Howdy ...

Super-duper nice! Janice doesn't sing the Blues - she epitomozes it with those long-lonesome vocals she renders so convincingly. Great arrangement!.

And Floyd came through like a champ - guess I'm gonna have to sell my guitar now! I do agree his lead riff should come up a little more foward in the mix. What a wonderful listen!!!

I can't stay in this smokey bar long, but I'm sure glad I came!
I have a hard time trying to picture it without the guitar in there but it sure sounds great with it!
The groove is absolutely stellar. Has a very black velvety feel to it.
Personally I liked the mix the way it is. But mixing just like many things in music is such a personal preference. There is no right or wrong I just know I like what I heard. :-)
Janice on vocals. I mean, doesn't that already say everything I need to say?
I like the cover artwork a lot as well. Is that a composite?
I think with songs that don't resolve it's effective simply because...

It's not hard to hear why Floyd felt compelled to play a pit moaning guitar on this song.
THANK YOU for not resolving...the story doesn't resolve and this is reinforced by the chord progression...it tugs with dis ease at the desire to please.
Vocals are on point.
Arrangement and treatment are spot on.
Melody & narrative in the bag.
The do right duo, (plus one) done double plus good.

Cheers

I'm a sucker for blues, and I love everything about this... but I wish the solo was a bit louder. wink

Thanks for bringing this back with a facelift!

One of the moodiest blues songs I've heard in a long time.
And, man (or better, girl), the first "ridge" you sing is soooo good. Love it!
And that Floyd guy knows how to play a solo that supports the song perfectly without showing off.
Perfect!

Yeah! Not sure how I managed to miss this the first time around, but happy I get to hear it now.

Janice sounds great no matter what she does, but man, when she sings slow blues .... magnificent!

Good "blues" write Bud, and the mix works for me.

floyd "Sticky Fingers" jane, love it!

Good one guys and Gal, right up my alley.

Thanks for the backstory! Ain't it funny how things happen? Sticky Fingers. Unpredictable.

What a neat collab and a cool tune. And nice chops on that there geetar, but as usual, Janice steals the show:)

Take care.

Thank you Nigel. We are glad you liked it. Although having mixed since the ‘60’s I’m admittedly still a work in progress and a believer that mixing is never finished just abandoned. smile FWIW there is considerable guitar volume shaping via an auto lane with fill tapers, a slight tag fade and 1-2 db bumps here and there. I do agree that solos and vocal leads are best at or near the same levels. Perhaps a “Janice Bias” smile results in my penchant for bringing her vocal more forward than typical. BTW, I did upload a very slightly altered version last evening with a 1 db drop on the vocal, an increase in the LUFs and a tweak to the multi-band compressor. Wonder if SC is over compressing it?? Dunno … but we three are happy with the mix. Thanks for your comment on Janice’s vocal and your mix thoughts.

This all rolls smoothly along the line with those sultry vocals.

J&B and Floyd...blues at it's best...super vocal...though it does bother me that Janice is so blue so often...get that girl some therapy frown in any case, super production as usual and Floyd (I didn't know he had that in him)...y'all give us all the blues...and we appreciate it!

I loved it!

Janice shines as usual. I like the sparseness of the instrumentation, (I struggle with that) and it's a fine mix.... Plus who knew Floyd had those lead guitar skills! I thought the level on his guitar was fine.

Well Done!

Well howdy, great to hear from you!
Thanks for the generous and thoughtful review. "Black velvety" is an appreciated and cool description.

Yes the photo is a composite ... the log, Janice and the background were three separate photos.
We appreciate the mention of it.

Come back soon!

Howdy....

This is a stellar track in all aspects.
Very classy and Janice's vox is pristine.
Every one else stole some of my thunder. smile

Very well done!

Boy, you always work together well, but I think this one really shined. I'm always jealous of Bud's mixes, and I think Janice did exceptionally well with this vocal. I'm sure glad Floyd came back at you with that solo guitar. I knew he played guitar, but don't get to hear him on lead very often. He had the feel just right in this one, and nailed it well. Great job one and all!

Brad

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
