Ditto

+1

And maybe just mute the MIDI drums (which we can then later unmute), but the MIDI drum arrangements would be there. There may be parts in the MIDI drums that we want to use to augment the RealDrums, which is easy enough to filter out the parts you want using the piano roll editor (as Mac has explained how to do numerous times).

yep, that's exactly what I try to do, but also if I export out to Reaper, I may then want to use the midi drums to trigger BFD and get the better drum mixing flexibility. This brings me to this: I might be cool to have the midi drums not be just the exact RealDrums, ideally for me the midi drums would be a full trap set which once exported to midi I could BFD it, the RealDrums would be a percussion oriented track i.e. congas + brushes type of thing, tracks which are more viable as a stereo track in a mix i.e. a lot more viable than a full kit.

BTW, on a tangent, it might be really cool to have a PGMusic wiki where all these cool How Tos from MAC could be stored
seriously, forums are not the best place to keep tutorials, how tos, not flexible enough i.e. user driven tutorials. PGMusic video tutorials are great, another tangent

One point though, if the BiaB song has a RealDrums style there probably isn't any midi drum patterns. So it can't generate midi drums in this case.

That's an excellent idea. I'd love to see a wiki for BB, RB how tos.

some of the styles that I tend to play wtih do also have midi drums, they tend to be percussion.

What I would like is to somehow capture the "live" drums i.e. the RealDrums via midi i.e. at the time of recording. I know blasphemy but perhaps performed on an electronic kit.

My issue is that I need the midi drums since I can't mix a stereo drum track of the entire kit

Well I'm not sure whether or not the BiaB style maker keeps the midi drum patterns when you set it to RealDrums. But either way it seems logical to me that RB would assume that since the style has RealDrums assigned then it should just generate RealDrums.

I do see your point of view though. There are times where you might want the midi drums instead of or as well as the RealDrums.

I think the easiest way you could do that is to change the style. In BiaB open the style in the style maker and turn off the RealDrums. Then save it with a new name so as not to lose the original (or I suppose you could overwrite the original if you always want this behavior).

Then, when you create a song in RB using that style you will get midi drums. It would be easy then to generate RealDrums inside RB. Then you can mute either or mix them however you want. I'd personally think that's a pretty logical approach all in all.

yes, I agree , it is a good way of handling this, but since again its all about the workflow , it would be really cool if BB/RB could at least make some default decisions and automate this for me. I always have the option to do it manually as you describe.

thanks

If you have Band in a Box, check out the BB File->Make a Standard MIDI file and be sure to check out the Options window in there, you can tell BB to export both a MIDI drum track AND the RealDrums track if you so desire.

Of course, that assumes that the style you are using is an older one that has a MIDI drum part in it.

Some of the newer styles that are RealDrums only may not have a MIDI part, but I think because many of the RealDrums styles are based on older styles of the same name, they do (RealDrums styles can be found in the Stylepicker category, "Styles with RealDrums" and are indicated as being such by having a dash in front of their filename "-Mystyle.STY" as an example.

It is possible to export both MIDI and RealDrums tracks (in BIAB) in one shot using the Make a Standard MIDI file command.

I expect to see this feature added to RealBand in future.

thanks, I know how to do that in BB what I hope is that a midi counterpart to RealDrums is provided as well within a BB file format so that when I load it into RB, both midi drums and RealDrums are there. Pretty necessary, if you are going to use something like BFD later down stream.

I would on this same though love to see RB be able to use VSTis with timing needs, that way EZdrummer and Jamstix could be used, then JS can be told to jam with audio

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
