New User to Biab - Trying to input melody from yamaha cvp405 with total failure - any suggestions on usb driver setup?

Main problem is that I have now lost all sound output and get the message "couldn't open the wave device. The likely cause is that another program is using the audio playback or has left the device open" - I am totally stumped now and have deadlines to meet using Biab - Can you HELP!!

**That message can come up if you have another audio program open at the same time as you open BiaB and both programs are set to use ASIO drivers.

**That message may also come up if things get corrupted or out of line in the OS or the program. Reboot the computer first and see if that clears it up.

**If the reboot doesn't do the trick, open BB, cancel the error message and then go to the Options menu and choose, "Return to Factory Settings" and use the second button down in there, which resets not only the program but your soundcard and MIDI stuff.

Good Luck and a big "Git-R-Done!" by that deadline!

First, I'm assuming that your sound device worked at one time with BiaB. If that is not the case, and this is a first time use with that soundcard and BiaB, this could be an entirely different troubleshooting situation. Has this system and sound device worked with BiaB previously? have you tried switching to MME drivers inside BiaB?

**Does your sound device work with any other Audio program(s)?**

Even if it does, if all else fails, try downloading the latest Drivers from the sound device's mfr's support webpage for your OS - and reinstall them. In this kind of case, I don't rely on any Driver install file that has been hanging around on the same hard drive, I download again.

Corrupted Drivers happen...

Hello Chris,

Can you describe how you have the keyboard connected to your computer? What are the exact names of the MIDI input and output drivers that you have selected in Band-in-a-Box? Are you using a DXi synth? Do you have MME or ASIO selected as your audio driver type?

Hi Andrew

I'm connecting a Yamaha CVP405 Clavinova to a Sony VaioVGN-AR11M via a USB cable from USB to HOST on the Clavinova to a USB port on the Computer.

Available Drivers are - Input - Yamaha USB IN 0-1

Output - Microsoft Midi Mapper
Microsoft GS Wavetable SWSynth
Roland VSC
Yamaha USB OUT 0-1
Yamaha USB OUT 0-2

I Have tried DXi Synth and MME is selected although I have tried all these at some stage.

I have recovered the output sound but the lost it again subsequently a number of times when I have changed Styles.

I really don't know what I am doing when it comes to sound cards and the manual is not a lot of good if you don't speak "Soundese"

Is there a simple step by step routine I could follow?

Many Thanks

Chris

Hi,

If you open up the MIDI Monitor (Window menu | MIDI Monitor), do you see any activity when you play your keyboard? If not, that means there is no MIDI data getting to your computer. Are you sure there isn't a switch on the keyboard that needs to be set to "USB to Host"? Probably you should try reinstalling the drivers (as suggested) using the latest drivers for your OS from the Yamaha website.

If that doesn't help, you could consider using the MIDI connection instead - i.e. get a USB interface that has MIDI in/out cables on one end, and a USB connector on the other. Then you could use the MIDI OUT port on your keyboard instead of the USB to host port.

Well to start with, you could select the Yamaha MIDI driver on the Input side, GS Wavetable on the Output side, de-select the DXi synth box, and select MME drivers. This is a simple setup just for testing purposes. (later you will want to select a DXi synth for output). But with this setup when you press Play you should hear the currently loaded Band-in-a-Box style/song playing. If you don't, then solve this problem first - most likely a Windows volume control issue. Once that's solved, then play some notes on your keyboard and you should hear/see them in Band-in-a-Box.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
