Hi,

is there anyone else being the owner of the very recent Avid MBOX Studio?
I just got mine - the sound is beyond my expectations, but there are a few things I find quite tricky - so it would be nice to seek advice with a more experienced owner.

Kind regards

Not likely to find many of those users here. I do use Pro Tools, just don't have that hardware.

The best community to discuss this would be the Avid forums.

Avid Forums

Upon 2nd look, they do have a Mbox Studio-specific forum:

questions cos this looks nice.
does anyone know the following ?

1..is mbox multiclient asio on pc ?
(if it is i'll add it to the multiclient pg thread.)
2..what latency figs are people getting ?
3..simple fast set up in win ? no dongles ?
4..no online registration needed for those studios that keep their studios always off line // never on line.?

vari impedence is a nice touch.

i'm assuming it runs biab/rb without a hitch.

best

No idea

2..what latency figs are people getting ?

18 ms Roundtrip - 8,9 Output

3..simple fast set up in win ? no dongles ?

It was pretty straight forward on my Mac - so I assume Windows shouldn't be much more complicated

4..no online registration needed for those studios that keep their studios always off line // never on line.?

You have to register to download the MBOX Control software, which you can't do without, but else I'm pretty sure you can go off line

I've been hearing about multiclient ASIO for a long time and so far I've seen nothing to indicate that it has been done yet.

One application at a time.... unless I have somehow missed that big announcement.

Peters Garage.

Thanks for the info.
the latency figs surprised me.
cos there are other interfaces with 4ms or less.

Student.

this is a new product from Avid not the old mbox.

Guitarhacker.

more than a few now offer the multiclient feature.
and there are pg users using mc including moi.

heres a list/added posts updates etc.

This figure was what my setup produced, you will probably find nicer figures from AVID :-)

This is not the old MBOX - this is a new product called MBOX Studio, and it's a quite different ball game and price tag compared to the old MBOX. Also the pre-amps are similar to what you find on AVID Carbon, and there are a few other quite nifty features to enjoy.

I just recorded my vocals on it yesterday....man! it was a mind expanding upgrade from Focusrite, but also more than double up on the price tag. The mind blowing thing for me was, that I felt in full control of the gain staging and my vocal, and I didn't run into either lack of dynamics or clipping - just a pure very neutral colored sound (which I the added a High Pass Filter to and Soft Limiting...both built in features

I found out - that the buffer sample size matters on the roundtrip

A small buffer of 32 samples gives you a roundtrip of 7,9 ms - the number I referred to elsewhere in this thread was for a sample size of 256 samples

...hopes that this clears the confusion a bit

Yes, there's a balancing act between latency and the software being too late handling a sample.

Gordon.

still seems high to me.

just google v low latency audio interface.

some are very low...presonus quantum ? 1 msec ?

https://www.presonus.com/products/quantum

too many quids for me but looks really nice.

same with the motu m series and ssl i believe.

i'm getting 4 ms or less currently.

one really interesting interface for us on low budgets
and its 32 bit float !..is the new uac 232 by zoom at 200 bucks. i'm looking closely at it...but i cant find out the latency stats.

https://www.soundonsound.com/news/zoom-reveal-uac-232

notice the comment about 'low-noise recordings without the need to set any gain levels.'

your a tech whizz tell me your opinion as it looks real nice to this bloke. but of course there will be a response from competitors.

It does, yes. 32 samples (at 48k) suggests < 1ms per buffer, so < 2ms roundtrip at the buffering itself, but there's also USB latency, ADC/DAC latency and CPU responsiveness to consider. That could total up to 4ms fairly easily, so it possibly should be able to do better.

7-9ms is likely OK, though.

I'm presuming it's not going via an external USB hub, which would add a little more.

Mostly favorable review in the January 2023 Sound on Sound. They like it especially for guitarists (built in tuner). They said “low latency performance isn’t amazing”. Unique innovations, they said.

I bought it especially for the quality of the Pre-Amps - especially for my vocals, since the Focusrite Scarlett that I replaced more or less has rubbish Pre-Amps, which require a lot of post processing (often over processing) to get the vocals right.

I always record with "Low latency" mode switched on in Logic Pro X - otherwise I find, the timing and tempo of all the recording I do seems to be all over the place - and much worse than my performances. Neither the upgrade of Mac nor the upgrade of this MBOX Studio has changed much about that.

Though I am not Chris Squire (ex- Yes bass player "whom Trevor Horn claims could hear 2-3 ms off) and my skills probably are below average, I can still hear if something is not tight enough.

This "box" is fairly new, and I assume/hope that future firmware upgrades may improve a thing or two.
