Sort of related. I was watching the movie Charade the other day on Turner Classic Movies. Turns out it is in the public domain. When it was released, the studio screwed up the copyright notice. In doing so the movie went into the public domain immediately, but all the music (Henry Mancini) is copyrighted. Crazy.

Unless you are really worried someone is going to steal something the registration of the copyright is not really required. All you need is proof you created it on the date you created it. You have the copyright as of that moment. There are many ways to do that. You are correct registering copyright on everything you create can get expensive unless you are making a living doing it, then you can deduct those fees of course.

Don't confuse having something "copyrighted" with owning the copyright. Registration of the copyright is not required for you to own your copyright. It certainly makes it easier if you are getting ripped off, but it is not required for you to have copyrighted material. The copyright exists as soon as you create a new work that is not derivative or copy of someone else's work.
