The muted trumpet sounds really good in many of the "horn sections". Now we need some soloists s well.
A muted trombone might be cool too.

+1 for RTs and MIDI

I arrived early to a restaurant.
The manager asks, "do you mind waiting a bit?"
I said no.
"Good", he said. "Take these drinks to table 3"

+1 Been asking for this one since last decade, give or take a Tuesday!

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!

You could help out PG Music if you specified the type of mute, or provided a sound clip. As a trumpet player, I have at least six mutes I use all the time, and a few other oddballs. I’m guessing you probably want a Harmon with no stem, or a cup mute. Maybe a plunger for Dixieland etc.

Well, I was looking for the sound for a ballad. When I think of trumpeters with muted I immediately think of Miles but I’m kind of working on a sort of new age / smooth jazz thing. Chris Botti comes to mind. I’m not really a big fan of this type of music but I find myself doing more and more. And yes I think it’s a harmon mute.

Blues1952, I wonder if you are old enough to remember the underrated trumpeter Jonah Jones. He had the smoothest ballad sound I ever heard, on cup mute.

Note to Tobin (hi): I use a harmon (no stem) for an occasional song, but it's much harder to play for longer periods than a cup or certain other mutes. And, if I'm doing the solo chair in a big band, forget it unless I am very close mic'ed. Cup mute is my go-to for ballads.

Matt, I’m old enough for just about anything but I was not aware of Jones. I looked him up I’ll have to do a deep dive tonight.

Hi Blues1952, can you post a couple of youtube links with the kinds of styles/grooves you had in mind?

Hi Tobin. Does a jazz chord template exist with which I could try to record something like this?

Here is an example I like, the more "metallic" the better.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Those trumpets sound sweet. But to be honest, the trombone is my favorite of the brass horns!

Trombones! I think not. The French horn is the best sounding brass instrument followed by flugelhorns and trumpets. Maybe bones are a distant third. grin grin grin

As for trombone, I like trombone but not so much muted. When Frank Sinatra played with him Tommy Dorsey used to start every song with a fairly long muted trumpet solo. I was so happy when fast forward began.

Hi Blues1952,

Thanks again for the suggestion! We've added two new muted trumpet soloists in Band-in-a-Box 2025 based on this suggestion:
