Hello everyone. If you already have Cubase, I would recommend, like others before, Halion Sonic SE, as it comes free with Cubase. Any of the mentioned is fine as GM, especially SoundCanvas and Coyote for my taste. The advantage of Halion Sonic is that you can use more complex presets than the simple GM, with arpeggiator and other effects for example. For this you have to disable the GM mode in Halion options and so it will not respond to GM program changes. You can customize each channel and sound quite different from the classic GM. I share the view that it is more straightforward to work this on the DAW. So most of the time I use Halion Sonic in GM mode when working in Biab. I don't know all the options mentioned here but, to me, it sounds a little better than the others that I Know. Best regards

You know, I realize it may be overkill for your needs, but I tend to agree with Notes on this. The Ketron SD-2 was way ahead of it's time when it came out, and the sounds are still pretty awesome, even today.
Having said that, on both Reverb.com and ebay, I can't find one. But, I can find a Ketron MidJayPlus player, used, for sale. It's in France, but I don't think there would be any issue getting it sent over.

https://reverb.com/item/67405536-ketron-midjay-plus

You can read the product specs here, as well as downloading a manual.

https://www.ketron.it/prodotto/midjay-plus-2

You can see what a guitar player says about this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsLXOM4fxkI

I will say he's playing the Pro version, not the Plus version and there may be things in the Pro that aren't available in the Plus version.

I'm an American expat living in France. I don't know about larger packages, but it took TWO WEEKS for my U.S. and Arizona taxes to make their way from France to the U.S., and that was with expensive postage and tracking ($5 each).

Inside of the E.U., used products can be shipped without incurring 20% (for France) VAT. When I shipped my goods from the U.S. to France, I paid no import duties after certifying that nothing was newer than 6 months. Nothing was, because the brand new G&L Fullerton Deluxe Fallout bass that was included spent more than six months in transit. The shipper picked up my goods on the 1st of March and delivered them the following October.

If shipping via ship is used, you're looking a several months. If shipping via UPS, for example, you will pay a LOT more.

AS Gary Curran says, it may well be overkill, but Ketron's SD1000 is comparable with the older SD2. $350-ish and external USB hardware. The sounds are good, but of course as an external synth it can't be rendered directly within BiaB, though it could be recorded via a sound module.

As an add-on to Gordon's comments, when you use a hardware MIDI synth, you can always just record the final mix in real time; that's what I do. Most people understand the term 'rendering' to include the ability to save the file to audio in less than real time (the actual time to play the song).

Gordon,
I saw one SD1000 on ebay, but they wanted like $500 in shipping. I don't know if that was a typo or not, but I didn't post it. I think they were asking somewhere around $400 for it.

Gary,

The eBay thinkg may be a typo or a scam, but whatever, I most certainly wouldn't pay that postage.

Thomann sell them, I believe to the US.
KetronAmerica list them.
Ketron Italia clasim to ship "all over the world".
AJamSonic seem to list only the more expensive models.

I suspect the mention of Microsoft's product was made very "tongue in cheek"

I use to sell on eBay. Let's say I sell an item for $200.00. I cannot remember the percentage but eBay gets part of your sale. So, I sell an item for $50.00 and $150.00 postage then their take is some percentage of the $50.00. I ship the item cheap as possible and keep the rest of the profit as profit.

I never did this and it is frowned upon my eBay.

Good poinr Deb, though I think(!) they now charge their percentage on the total, not just the price.

That would solve the eBay problem. For a while there eBay was taking down auctions that did that kind of activity.

Thanks for the update.

I'm sure it was a typo, and before bidding on it, I would send the seller a question about it.

LOTS of stuff is sold on ebay at what seems a reasonable price but with very stiff, profit guaranteeing postage costs. Guitars for $100 bot with $350 postage - that sort of thing. It's usually a good indication of a scam.
