The older folks here on the forum may remember I released a CD in 2006, Brazilian Wish. Peter Gannon gave me permission to mention it here because all of the nine tracks were composed in BIAB. I continue to get good airplay, and also questions about the production. Remember, 2006 was before RealTracks. Most of my work has been to do horn arrangements for other folks. What I do is compose or arrange in BIAB, then send the demo to the other musicians, so when we hit the studio, everyone is ready to go. BIAB is an invaluable tool in this process, since I can play most horns but no rhythm instruments. Here is a track I released last year that is being played by DJs who like Latin jazz. Again, the song was written in BIAB, along with the harmony parts for the horns. I did all the trumpet parts, a friend played trombone, and some top LA friends did the rhythm tracks. This is Thirty Cigars. Hope you enjoy a quick listen. https://riojazz.com/songs/337thirtycigars.mp3 Dancing is permitted. What does the song title mean? After a gig, we often smoke a cigar. I wrote this for the thirtieth anniversary concert of my Brazilian jazz concert band.

Darn ... trust me to forget to bring my headphones away with me ... notepad speakers are, um, sub-optimal. I will listen properly when I get home.
My understanding of Brazilian music is that dancing is not so much permitted as de riguer.

This one isn't Brazilian; it's Latin jazz, which is Afro-Cuban / Puerto Rican based.

I'm not sure how much difference that makes to the rules about dancing :-)
There are loads of style and rhythmic variations in Latin-American, African and their many combinations and I don't pretend to confidently know one from another. But the music is mostly for dancing.

Very enjoyable, thanks for sharing. After the piano ... , then the drums... then the guitar.... , the trumpet and then the trommbone are my very favorite instrument sounds.

At least I'm not last. The trombone usually wins that race.

Cool music Matt. I always enjoy listing to your music. Now I get to say I am too old to dance instead of I just don't know how...lol

Matt
Had to drop in, which as you know I almost never do anymore, to give you a big thumbs up and a well-deserved POB ("pat on back") – love the tune and your trumpet work as well.
Again good stuff and good luck

Darn ... trust me to forget to bring my headphones away with me ... notepad speakers are, um, sub-optimal. I'm home and can now listen properly. Yes, excellent. There's a great sense of that looseness of feel of Latin, with the precision of play that makes it appear easy.

Unique, fulfilling, perfect Latin Jazz.
Great arrangements.

As did I. If you liked this song I suggest you purchase the album. I believe you will love it.

I know a lot of the rhythmic variations in this music but certainly not all. What I enjoy about BIAB is that it's easy to mix styles. Many of my songs do this. It may not be pure to a particular genre, but it works.

Very stellar work here. Congrats on the track. I would love to hear more about how it all came together. Also how it was mixed.

Rob, it was mixed by Mark Dann and me in Mark's studio in Woodstock NY.
The trumpet and trombone parts I wrote were recorded by Mark Dann.
The rhythm section is by The Echo Park Project, a terrific Los Angeles-based group led by Carlo Lopez, the brother of my percussionist Tomas Martin Lopez. Carlo recorded the tracks as a favor to Tomas, and Tomas gave me the tracks as a gift for the work I did composing and arranging his 2010 CD, On the Beat Path. That CD features eight of my songs and two by the fabulous Latin jazz pianist Bill O'Connell (who played with flautist Dave Valentin).

Well done Matt . . . . here's looking forward to the writing of Forty Cigars PS> We cycle thru our Matt Finley Pandora Station about twice a year and dwell there for about a week each time.
https://soundcloud.com/user-646279677BiaB 2026 Windows For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Thanks! I ended the band in 2018 after 32 years, so getting to Forty will be tough. We will see, since I still give concerts...
As I understand it, Pandora starts with some of my songs and mixes others, but then each user alters it with likes and dislikes. In other words, your station named as my name will be different than mine. At least that's how I think it works. But thank you!
