My synth –a Roland Juno-D- includes an ‘XFER to MIDI’ utility which will ‘transmit all of the user area data (patches, performances, system etc.) from the MIDI out connector to an external sequencer.’

Is it possible, using Power Tracks Pro Audio 11, to:
- receive and back up this data (presumably to an SMF file) ?
- reload such data sets from PTPA to the Board ?

If so, how ?

Many thanks in advance.

Use the sysex window and then it becomes pretty intuitive.

If the dump is too large for sysex window, you can record the dump onto a blank track as you would with any midi data.
Most Rolands do this pretty easily. Highlite blank track, hit record and then initiate the dump from the board.
Set resolution up high for easier editing. 'Options-resolution'

To reload you have to set the synth up to recive the dump, then either send the sysex file using sysex window, or 'play' the dump if you recorded it.

The data will show as a series of sysex events in hexadecimal.

Thanks Bob,

Just a question now of whether to use this method or the proprietary Roland software (called 'Juno-d Librarian') which, at first glance, did not seem particularly easy to use.

I've used the Juno-G software with no problem, and also done it as described above. I guess it depends on where you want to be able to pull it from later. Or if you need the dump as part of a performance.
I've used the dump transferred over MIDI rather than pulled from disk in keyboards in the past, as it was faster, since the sequencer program would already be running. Also the Juno-G needs to have the MIDI connection stopped in order to use the librarian via the USB data connection (its either/or with the 'G') not sure how the 'D' handles that.
May be more reliable via the Juno software though, as there may be a checking system for anything corrupt, or may even keep to two copies in case of corruption; not sure if it has any benefits.

We're getting there, Bob.
The Juno-D needs a USB/MIDI interface to hook up to a PC, unlike the G I believe. (*)

I'm just waiting on Roland support to get back to me to guide me through the use of 'Librarian' (the 'on-line' manual is difficult to follow).

The purpose of these procedures from my point of view is backup and syncing my two machines so that they are identical. I have one that will now stay hooked up to my studio, while the other goes out to rehearsals & gigs.

In fact there now appear to be no fewer than four ways of effecting these backups:
- In Librarian, using the .jul file format
- In Librarian, using SMF
- In PTPA via the SysEx window
- In PTPA, by 'recording' the SysEx data in a track, as you describe.

(*) BTW, I just bought and installed one of these - the MIDISPORT UNO (M Audio).
I ran into a small problem which was easily dealt with by M-Audio customer support. Although my PC was happy to install the device's drivers from the maker's disc, it preferred to use Windows' own "class compliant" drivers when it saw that the device was plugged in.
Result: neither PG Music nor Roland's software was 'seeing' the interface. As a remedy, we 'forced' Windows to use the M-Audio drivers.

On some systems it is important to keep using the same exact USB port, otherwise Windows will indeed try to accomodate it.

Juno-G does use USB for MIDI and data, like the 'D' but also has the standard MIDI connections if preferred.

The various possiblities are nice, since in a live situation being able to 'play' the sysex in from the available sequencer.
