If nothing else , this is an interesting concept.

For those not on Facebook... Essentially, this individual has used AI to "brute force" write every possible melody using combinations of notes. Much like a hacker would do with trying to decipher a password. Over 470 Billion melodies. Put them on disk, copyrighted and the then released them to the public domain effectively ending copyright lawsuits.

We'll see how it stands up to the legal challenges sure to follow not counting the existing melodies that now have legitimate claim of copyright violations.

But... it's on Facebook so it's gotta be true.

What’s next? AI creates a trillion possible inventions and patents them? This activity will ultimately occupy courts for the next millennium assuming it is continued to run rampant.

Since he and his partner has copyrighted every existing melody can they be sued by the original copyright owners? If so I hope they have a ton of money.

Of course assumed that that was true, which I doubt. I think they could have created every mathematical combinations of notes, including all octaves, but I doubt they could legally copyrighted all of them knowing that they have included existing melodies.

That's an interesting slant Mario, but what would the original copyright holder GET from the suit? The reason those kind of suits come to pass are that the original composer wants a share of the proceeds generated by the stolen intellectual property. In this case all they did was copyright them and place them into public domain, which essentially says "We own these but you are free to use them."

I frankly don't know how "copyright" and "public domain" go into the same sentence. By definition public domain means "free for anyone to use for any reason, including for business or commercial reasons".

This is slightly similar to domain squatting. Similar (using myself as an example) because I have a domain I own but don't use. Dissimilar in that if somebody wants that domain they have to buy it from me. These guys own all those melodies but are saying anybody can use them for free.

So if I write a song today, if they truly made every combination of 12 notes possible, do I have to list them on a CD if I publish? Doesn't this put the copyright Office out of business? From the other angle, can't I use them for the melodies of the 40-45 songs I currently have copyrighted? I could probably sue, but they didn't record them and are not making money from my melody, so what do I sue for?

Really an interesting topic that creates more questions than it answers..

I'm not a lawyer nor have I played one on TV but I would think that if you owned the original copyright you could force thm to take said song(s) off of the public domain list.

I don't know how official it is, because it hasn't been tested, but I read somewhere that AI generated content cannot be copyrighted, because a human didn't create it.

I disagree with the extent the legal profession has taken the copyright lawsuits. But of course, what I think doesn't matter.

Copyright law came about to protect the income of the creator. In other words, if I wrote a song, and someone else recorded it without paying me, it would damage my income.

IMO Blurred Lines did not do anything to affect the sales of Got To Give It Up, and therefore should not have been brought to court.

I worked for Motown, opened for and and casually knew Marvin Gaye many years ago. I don't think he would have brought that suit up if he were still alive.

We all borrow from what came before.

“Good Composers Borrow, Great Composers Steal.” — attributed to Igor Stravinsky

I think Thicke and Williams just borrowed the Marvin Gaye rhythm, as Sheeran pointed out in his lawsuit, “We all use the building blocks of music.” And from my experience with Motown, the session musicians we now call The Funk Brothers had as much or more to do with that rhythm as Marvin did.

What Notes Norton said. Something similar to this "AI" was done about a decade or so ago using MIDI (maybe that group can sue this group). Maybe one of the reasons it's not been retained in general knowledge is BS can dry up and disappear when exposed.

A lot of things are going to change but I don't think we're going to all end up brainsturbating.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could attract and retain a lawyer trained in copyright law and who has a passion for music to bring clarity to this important subject? Free of charge of course.

I wonder if there is an organization such as The American Association of Lawyers That Rock Your Socks Off

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.
