I must admit that in these days of laptops & smartphones, I don't quite get the point of iPads..? Do you think they are going in the direction of CD's and Walkman's ? They are obviously OK if you want to read the same news or info you can get on your mobile device, but on a larger screen.

I must admit that in these days of laptops & smartphones, I don't quite get the point of iPads..? Tablets generally are pretty good for carrying all one's music around in one small package that will sit nicely on a music stand. I can't sensibly read sheet music on a mobile 'phone. Younger eyes may well do better.

I have mine filled with concert videos and movies. Since mine has the actual output jack I can aux connect it to my car radio. I have metal adhesive plates on the back so I can mount it to the magnetic mount on the vent, and when I am going to be driving for a really long time (like to Herbstock) I can have concert videos playing. Other than that it's just like any other tablet. Browsing, Facetime video...

I use mine for all my sheet music in a concert. I can also bring up the scores if there is a question. The case has magnets that snap to a music stand. The Bluetooth foot pedal turns pages.

I use my Ipad all the time. I use it to remotely control Studio One Pro with the remote app while recording away from the computer. I also use a program called OnSong which contains all the words and chords to all the songs I am playing live. It also can use a blue tooth airturn pedal to scroll the lyrics while playing. I have a Ipad holder that attaches to the mic stand. So for me I see no need to get rid of it.

I still have my original iPad. Quickly made obsolete during iOS 5 with no further updates or software made available. The astronomy program still works on it and that alone is keeping out of the bin.

Hmm, I haven't done it for a while, but I can also use my tablet as a WiFi-connected control surface for my mixer, so I can wander around the venue with it. That does work with a mobile 'phone, but the screen is rather small.

Yep. I have done that too. Get the right software for your mixer (I worked with a Presonus), take a router with you, and connect them. I tried it with a phone too, but like you said, WAY too small. With old eyes and fat fingers, it was rough.

With old eyes and fat fingers, it was rough. I have the SoundCraft Ui24R, which has no physical surface and I sometimes regret that ... screens are not so good in high ambient lighting. The Ui25R, though, does come with a built-in WiFi hotspot and makes a good stage-box in itself. It uses a web browser as the interface (using Java I imagine) ... remarkably effectively I have to say ... so no special software, meaning I can easily control it from Linux, tablet, 'phone, etc.. I have a 24" touch-screen on the PC, which works nicely. It is usable on a 'phone as it has several size optimisations, but a 'phone is definitely less than great.

I use the IPad for gigging. 3-4 times a month right now. I play backing tracks on it I create in BIAB.
I also use it for most every other app save BIAB, LogicPro and DaVinci Resolve.
I used it to post this on the thread using Firefox

I use mine to play AVI files with scrolling chordsheet/audio at gigs four times a month on average. Lighter and more robust than a laptop. I have two iPads that are clones of each other so I always have a backup. One stays in the glove compartment so I can put it on the passenger seat and sing along to warm up as I drive to the gig.

Do you think they are going in the direction of CD's and Walkman's ? Something like that was the assumption, I suppose, since it seemed to my limited knowledge they could only do things which other gadgets (albeit plural) can do better. But then just last week I got an ad in my mail about yet another version, so not only are they not going away, they are still getting upgrades!

Something else I use on my tablet (mine's Android) is iRealPro, which is now also available for iPad.
It works a bit like a very basicl BIAB, in that you type chords into a chord-sheet, together with a key and a tempo, select a style and it plays an accompaniment. It does a surprisingly good job, IHMO, for an app on a tablet. Using it and knowing friends also used BIAB, was why I tried BIAB, which definitely does do a better job and allows melody (iRealPro has no melody capability). There are times with BIAB, that I'm temped to go back to iRealPro, just for the ease of use. I rarely have to fight it to get something useful, it just works. I've even built lead-sheets like this during a jam session ... someone reads out the chords and I enter them, then find a style later to practice.

I think the future may be the reverse: iPads will replace laptop computers. Just buy a case with attached keyboard and there isn’t much you can’t do with an iPad.

That reminds me of a video years back about how you can add a keyboard and mouse to an iPad, and with some adapter you can plug it into a monitor. And the girl doing the video, who was straight faced through the whole thing, summed it up with "So you can see how easy it is to take your perfectly portable iPad, which it can be assumed is part of why you bought it, and turn it into every other laptop in the world that anchors you to a desk." And she paused about 5 seconds and slowly started to shake her head while muttering "Why in the name of all that is holy would anybody want to buy a portable device and then set off on a path to un-portable it?" And as the video faded out as she continues to shake her head. It was perfect. I tried to find it but I have no idea who it was, if she is still on youtube, still even alive for that matter, and how I'd search in a way that doesn't pop up 2000 videos of how to add a keyboard done by the greedy and unethical youtube whores that are happy to do a scripted (by the manufacturer) ad hawking a product as long as they get something free to do it.

Worst thing about ipads is once the OS is upgraded a number of versions then it's virtually impossible to download an app from the app store that will work, and it seems you can't upgrade the ipad to a later version either.
Well you can buy a new ipad and I am sure Apple likes that idea.
Although a Windows pc can do the same, but not to the same degree.

This issue comes because the newer models have newer hardware and they don't see a reason to pay the code monkeys to update the older OS. Also doing that would create competition for themselves when they much prefer selling new hardware. I bought my mini 2 in 2015 and it updated to 12.5.7 in January, which is the last one they will do.

Unfortunately, Apple seem to be notorious for delivering ongoing updates that make their existing products (hardware or software) become obsolete.
