Hi Everyone,

This website has been a godsend for me. Thank you for all those who continually help us newbies out. Lol. I have a question regarding the bridge portion of a song. I could probably figure this out on my own after several months--but figured I would see if someone could save me some time. I'm currently working on a song and I would like to change up the bridge portion only. I thought there was a way to transpose a section of a song by bar # and length but cannot seem to figure that out. Also is there a way to add a solo right before the bridge for like 8 bars? Or possibly add a harmony just for the bridge portion? I also recorded the song a bit different. Instead of using multiple choruses I made the whole song one chorus about 150 bars long. Still used the part markers. So my bridge is from bar 128 to bar 143 if that helps. BIAB has a million options so I'm sure it's my inexperience that is limiting how I can do this. Thanks again,
Roger

Hello Roger,

You can add a solo for a specific section of the song by pressing the Custom... button (solo mode section) in the Select Soloist window. You can add a harmony for a range of bars by using the Edit Settings for current Bar dialog. Press F5 where you want the harmony to start and choose the harmony. Press F5 at the last bar and select 'no harmony'.

You can't transpose part of a song. One way to do this without re-typing in the chords, is to temporarily save a copy of your song under a new name. Tranpose this temporary song, select the bars of your bridge and copy them, open up your (un-transposed) song, and paste in the transposed bars (this is only applicable to the chords, it would be a little more work if you had a melody as well, but it could be done by saving the transposed melody track as a MIDI file and importing part of it to the melody track of your song).

Hi Andrew,

Thanks or your reply. I got the solo part figured out thanks to you, but still having problems doing the harmony for a certain range. You said "Edit Settings for current Bar dialog"--I guess I'm not sure what that means. could you elaborate a bit more? If I wanted a harmony from bar 128 to 144 could you describe how to do that again? Thanks. You've been a great help so far.

Andrews answer is very good as long as you limit your Q to what you can do within BIAB - but what is your endproduct gonna be? Is it a midifile or sheetmusic or a full orchestral score or a demoproduction that you will record and mix in let us say Logic 9, Pro Tools 8 or Cubase 5? I understand your Q, but the answers you will get, differs a lot from what you are aiming at. Is it a schoolproject for educational purposes I would do it differently then a demoproduction where time costs money...

Sometimes I uses modified styles and do two different rendered midifiles that I import to Pro Tools after eachother, not because it's the clever and right way to do it - but it takes a lot less time and right now I have to right a song a week, so I can't fool around and do everything by the book...

Sorry, the dialog is called "Edit Bar Settings". You can open it by pressing F5, or by going to the Edit menu and clicking Bar Settings. First, click on the bar that you're interested in adding the harmony. Then, click on the bar that you want the harmony to stop, press F5, and select 'no harmony'.
