I bought BB 2010 for Windows a few days ago and have been playing around to get to know the program. I have a simple experimental song. It doesn't have much more than a dozen or so chord changes, and I have been loading styles to see what they sound like.

But suddenly today, when I load that song that worked fine previously, and start playback, the BB UI hangs, while the song plays back. The UI is completely unresponsive. It doesn't show each new chord being played, or any other animation whatsoever, while the song plays back audibly. The only way to get out of that state is by end-tasking BB. I tried loading the song and selecting a different style, and once again it plays the song (with the updated style) but the UI still hangs. When I load other songs, like the sample songs, BB does not hang.

This is not a good sign of things to come. Does this mean if I work on a song, that one day the song will just become unusable for no reason? Any ideas what is going on, and how to fix this?

BTW, I just installed 295 and it didn't fix the problem.

OK, seems the problem was that there was a stray chord entered after the "End" marker. Once I removed that chord, BB no longer hangs.

It just seems strange that BB will hang for such a minor reason.

Hi BitFlipper - good to see ya here. Welcome to the BIAB forum. I know you from the Cakewalk/Sonar forum.

There must be something else going on. I say that, because I've had stray chords after the ending in a song and I've never seen this behavior in BIAB (as in crashing because of the strays).

Puzzling indeed.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi BitFlipper. If indeed you are the same as the BitFlipper on SONAR, we are very fortunate to have you here, with your audio engineering knowledge. Welcome. I'm 'Riojazz' on the SONAR forum (much more active here).

Of course, Welcome even if you aren't the same BitFlipper!

I concur with Mike, the presence of a chord after the 'end' is not enough to crash BIAB with any of my songs. I actually do this a lot, since I might try out many alternative chords as I compose a song, and I store the various ideas in the gray area beyond the 'end' of the song.

I have heard of corrupted songs before, but I do not recall one ever becoming unusable. Anyone else?

BitFlipper, just looking for more clues:

Did you by any chance use the Freeze function on any Real Tracks?

Does it make a difference if you set UAC in Windows 7 to the minimum?

What are you using for MIDI Output? DXi? External synth?

And one tip:

Whenever BIAB starts acting as you know it should not, there is a user settings file (/BB/intrface.bbw) that apparently can get corrupted. Opt, Return to Factory Settings will restore everything and sometimes solve those nagging problems. You can save your settings first, or else it will prompt you to do so (assuming you have BIAB version 2010).

Actually, while I am also on the Cakewalk forums, I am not the BitFlipper you are looking for. I've actually used the BitFlipper name even longer than BitFlipper has been a member on the Cakewalk forums (damn you BitFlipper!! - lol), so it is just the first name I try when I join a new forum. I should have known there was going to be a conflict some day, lol...

Thanks for all the tips. I will try them out next time I run into this. Since the problem seem to be gone right now, I'm not going to worry too much about it.

BTW, my setup is basically like this:
1. BIAB configured to receive MIDI In from my Edirol PCR-50.
2. BIAB configured to send MIDI out to FA-66 MIDI Out.
3. MIDI loopback cable from FA-66 MIDI In -> MIDI Out.
4. Sonar configured with one TTS-1 instance that acts like a GM playback module.
5. TTS-1 input set to FA-66 MIDI input port.

Yes, I am using BIAB 2010 (295). I mainly want to use it to experiment with new ideas and chord progressions. Once I have some ideas I will implement them in Sonar.

Please send that song to beta@pgmusic.com
(there should be no reason for BB to hang on a song)

Peter,

The song no longer causes the problem since I deleted the stray chord. However, I do have nightly backups, so I will go and retrieve an earlier version of the song and see if it reproduces and then email it.
