Bob, wow, this is a powerful song! Cool lyrics, evocative vocals, haunting melody, great production...I could go on. Love how subtly you placed the Oohs to thicken the mix without distracting from the vocals. Just masterful all the way around.
FWIW, River (and all of Blue) just makes me come undone, too. Mind blowing stuff that just never grows old.

That Record - still one of the 10 best ever.
Such Quality Lyrics! Your songs are like tiny novels.
A nice backing. As the song progresses the BAND becomes so cohesive that you "just" hear the song. As it should be.
This one really gets into ya and lives there...

Bob, for those of us of a certain age Joni sits high on the mountain. This is a tribute to her greatness as an artist. The minimalistic backing, especially the percussion works to perfection. Your poetry is in fine form and your expressive vocal carries the song with a nostalgic tone. Really well written and beautifully executed, Tom

As always, great lyrics and great vocals, but I really did NOT get what the song was about and was at a bit of a loss as to what to say.
Fortunately, some of the comments mentioned Joni Mitchell and her song(!) "River", so your song suddenly made sense to me.
But even without understanding the background, I would have liked your song for its melancholy mood and tasteful presentation.

Really like the use of the piano and background vocals in this one, Bob (and of course your lead vocal and lyrics).
That record is definitely one of my desert island discs. Still give my vinyl copy a spin every now and then.
