Whispering Asia

I posted the title before I got everything else ready. The entire post will be up in just a moment or two. Duh!!

This is the second of two songs I put together with the new Chinese instruments from BIAB 2024. This one has fuller and richer backing tracks and is noticeably more subdued. Noel Adams and I exchanged some thoughts about this particular song as I brought it to fruition. To make a long story short, I went on YouTube and watched/listened to clips from a couple of Chinese romance movies for some insight and guidance on how to make a few changes to better catch the Asian mood.

After a few adjustments to my original track, this is where I ended up. It's a soundscape for a romantic setting. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Alan

As soon as I locate the file with the backing tracks, I'll post it.

Here are the band members:

Alan,

Peaceful and flowing is the first thing that came to mind... A beautiful melody.

I love the blend of the instruments and the two synth pads sound really great. Also, the mix is superb.

Loved everything about this.

Did somebody say "lush"? Guess I'll have to say it. Lush! Alan, this is really nice! My only complaint is that the song ended before I could drift off to sleep. Ha! Keep up the great musical explorations!

Needless to say (say it anyway)...not a genre I've ever listened to.
But that certainly sounds good.
Excellent mix.

Job well done, I like it.
This would make a wonderful soundtrack for a movie.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Nice! The bass gives a nice low end to the song I usually don't hear.

I couldn't say whether it's even close to authentic, but it's pleasant to listen to! laugh

Great use of those RTs, Alan, and I like how you added some to the style. It's cool how you did some research. Man, I know there's a lot of people in that country, but your music shows those majestic mountains encircled by clouds. One can almost discern Taos archetecture, which is purposely meant to blend seamlessly with the natural beauty.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi Bob,

Many thanks. I spent more time on the mix than everything else combined. Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for letting me know.

Hi Ron,

Lush? Oh - you weren't referring to a propensity of an excessive intake of alcoholic beverage. Glad I got that out of the way!

Thank you very much for the kind words! I intentionally kept is short as most western ears have a hard time adapting to the sounds created by many of the various Asian instruments. We're used to seven notes in a scale whereas the Chinese scale has only five notes. I think that's true of most Asian music properties. Also, many of the Asian instruments are nor fretted, often making the transitions of notes via a simple slide of the finger on the fretting surface rather than a fretted change. Additionally, chords are generally not perceived in Asian music - they simply use linear notes that, in their opinion, work well together. They don't see them as notes in a chord - just the next note that works according to their ears.

Okay - Beginning Asian Music 101 class is over. Hear the bell ringing?

Glad you enjoyed it, Ron. I appreciate you letting me know. Thanks for the listen!

What? You don't listen to some this a couple times a week? Ha!

Actually, I do. I also like music from The Balkans. yes, there are some forms of music I really do not like - but that's a conversation I prefer to not open.

Thank you very much for the listen. I'm delighted it sounded good to you.

Hi Bass Thumper,

You're spot on. This was intended as the backdrop for a Chinese romantic interlude - romance, not sex. I'm delighted you liked it - thank you very much!

This is really mesmerizing, beautiful Eastern soundscape and lovely melody, but you have added your own personal touch with many nice chords that fit the overall mood. I'm really glad PGMusic brought us these Chinese RTs, they work for other genres too. Good balance of instruments and mix. Enjoyable journey through the peaceful Eastern countryside by the water, I can imagine beautiful temples and those curved roofs.

Alan, I am not an expert on this genre, well in fact I know nothing about, so I can't say if this is authentic or not. But I will say it is a very beautiful song. I think you captured the romantic vibe perfectly.
Great mix!

HI Marty!

Always a pleasure when you drop in for a listen. As far as the research, Noel Adams gave me a few hints It helped a lot! And yep, there a re quite a few folks over there. I'm delighted this took you on a trip away from all those folks and into the serenity of the countryside. And yes, that is gorgeous architecture. It's a very pretty country.

Thanks for the very nice comments! I sincerely appreciate them.

Hi Mario,

I'm no expert on the genre, either. But after almost 2 years in Asia, I kinda got a feel for the music. At least I think I did. I'll take romantic beauty as a compliment any day. Thank you!

Hi Alan,

Very different sound from what we are used to hearing! And pretty cool too, I like what you have done.

Now, just need to see where these instruments will fit in a blues song wink

Best to you and Di.
