Ain't Never Been This Bad

A Southern Blues with a slight hint of funk. An unusual chord pattern for a Blues song, but I kinda like it. Actually, I hear it more as a Blues ballad, rather than a true Blues number. The song came to me as I was plunking around on my Washburn acoustic yesterday. The organ gets a little loud in places, but I'm OK with it. I EQ-ed the Hi-Hat cymbal down as much as I could without losing it.

Will be over to listen to others this evening.

I don't think it sounds like Blues (but I'm no expert), I'd put it more in the Jazz corner (I'm even less of an expert there).
But whatever genre it is, I like it, it's quite relaxing, something I'd probably listen to over a good glass of wine and an interesting discussion.

As a life long southerner I gotta say I'm not sure what southern blues are (now given Janice's accent many folks think everything we do is southern and/or country. smile ) Of course there are southern based blues like Piedmont Blues, Texas blues and Nawlins blues but this sounds like excellent popish jazz to us.

So having babbled all that ... irrespective of the genre this is another example of your fine all BiaB productions. Nice mix too.
Anybody that needs convincing of the power of BiaB only needs to listen to your instrumentals.

And we enjoyed our listens!

I love it. I kept waiting for the vocals to come in, until I realized it was an instrumental, but I love the arrangement, especially the B3 in stereo!!

Good Morning!

I'm no expert at anything other saying' "Yes, Ma'am." and "Would you like that today or yesterday?" to my wife.

I'm delighted you liked it anyway!

Enjoy the wine!

Hi Ronnie,

Thanks for the listen and very nice comments! I don't do a lot of vocals these days. I used to, though. I had an accident that affected my vocal cords. Used to be a mid-baritone; now I just squawk in a crappy, pitchy tenor voice. I still have a dozen or so recordings from the late 90's when I still had a decent voice.

BTW, Next week I'll be posting a song I wrote especially for you and another member of the forum.

Take care,

Alan

Alan, love this! There were a few southern bands back in my day that would play this type of funky blues, so I'm right in line with you. You've done your usual masterful job of mixing and arranging BiaB instruments for lively effect. This is (another) nice one!

Alan this is an outstanding piece of music.
I wouldn't call it Southern Blues, maybe Jazz blues or Smooth Jazz blues?
Regardless of what you call it this is a work of art.
Loved it.

Back in my day the only time we started panic buying was when the bartender shouted "last call"!

Hi Ron,

You are very nice with your comments. I appreciate them very much. I played country music all my life, I've always enjoyed most other genres. Country is where the money was for me.

I'm more than delighted you liked this one.

Take care,

Alan

Howdy Folks,

Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting me know!

The way in which I've always perceived Southern Blues is it's got a touch of funk, relatively slow, A chord progression based around minor chords, and has somewhat of a ballad feel.

Regardless of the genre, it was a fun write and, as I said, quite glad you enjoyed it!

Take care,

Alan

Floyd,

Your reviews always put a smile on my face ... and make my soul smile!

I truly appreciate your reviews. Other than the people in my life, Music is the greatest pleasure I've had. It made me a very good living, but it has also massaged my creativity and has given me an outlet for it. Music has been very good to me. I hope have been good to it.

Again, many thanks.

Alan

Hi Alan,

Not sure what genre this falls into, but like floyd said, who cares! Damn good music.

Love the groove, and man, Brent can play! Love that melodic approach, I'll take melody over fast licks always.

Good one, enjoyed.

Hi Dave,

Thank you very much. And yeah, Brent's pretty good! He's dang near as good as you. There's another guy, who's not nearly as famous outside of Nashville,, who's about as good as him - Fred Newell. But Fred has been playing pedal steel (and playing it quite nicely) for the past 10 years or so - not much on the guitar. But he's a really good guitarist.

I appreciate your very nice comment!

Take care,

Alan

I’m not great at analysing genres but it sounds jazzy bluesy to me.
Great production.
