THAT MAN

i know you came to hate him
i can't blame you in the least
his whiskey fueled destruction
a multi-headed beast
lashing out in anger
he cut you down to serve his need
sharp words tore you to pieces
then he stood and watched you bleed
he was a stone
as love walked out his door
but that man
doesn't live here anymore

he wallowed in his heartache
sure you were to blame
he dreamed of retribution
without giving it a name
then he swore that he'd forget you
the mem'ries lost to the da rk
deny he ever loved you
erase you from his heart
it was a stone
when love walked out his door
but that man
doesn't live here anymore

i don't expect your forgiveness
or that you'll walk back through that door
i just wanted you to know
that man doesn't live here anymore

Thanks for listening

Floyd,

Love this. Your piano sounds great and LOVE that big MIDI bass sound. Great lyrics and EXCELLENT intimate vocal.

Also really like your very cool abstract B&W album cover.

Yeah, this one is a heartbreaker...

That's a downer but a great downer that I'm sure many can relate too, Floyd! A lot of great lines but especially loved "he cut you down to serve his need
sharp words tore you to pieces then he stood and watched you bleed". Great stuff all the way around!

Very good song Floyd, really enoyed it. I know it's a little long compared to your regular rights, but I'm glad you resisted any temptation to speed it up. The feeling really comes across at this speed and the production is fantastic. Great choice of instruments.

Hi, floyd jane.

Excellent write!

I had to run off somewhere before I had a chance to listen to the song, so I cheated and read through the lyrics first. Paints a strong emotional picture with a sad but partially redeemed story arc.

The arrangement has lovely builds in it, but always stays low key - there's no "big" part where the drum comes in. The ending is a sad apology, but is quiet and regretful instead of being cathartic. Fiddle, strings, baritone - they all work as they should.

Excellent vocals as well. Nice work on the piano. By the time they add the piano RealTracks you asked for, you'll have no need of them.

You don't list what MIDI instruments you used. Not that I don't already have enough bass and pianos, just curious.

This is up to your usual high standards. smile

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Floyd, yeah, "wow" neatly sums it up. Sad songs really are the best songs. Great vocals, and love the (mostly) acoustic instruments. The arrangement around the middle has a wonderful swirl and tension that works perfectly. Nice guitar, too! Just...wow (again).

I really like this sobriety. You never need big effects to make a good song.

Wow, that piano sounds perfect, floyd --not just the way it's played, but the quality of tone and what it adds to this wonderful piece of music. I hope you forgive me not spewing my usual calvalcade of praise that when read can seem like hyperbole. But if anyone listens to this and others you do, they would understand it is hyperbole without the insincere hype.

Enjoy whatever happens!

So I'm standing on the top of the tallest building in downtown Raleigh on the edge of the roof with my toes hanging off and the firemen down below are trying to talk me down off the ledge.

They asked me what was wrong.

I told them I'd been listening to some Talking Heads and I was all pumped up but then I listened to your new song and I wanted to shoot myself.

Do you have any final thoughts?? Is there even the tiniest light at the end of this long, dark, stench-filled tunnel of grief, alcoholism, despair and men treating women horribly?

No just kidding man. This is a really sad, sad, sad, sad song but it's a great sad song, and the piano playing is just beautiful. Gorgeous sound overall.

But next time can you do something really redneck with some loud redneck guitars and some redneck lyrics that don't really make any sense but are super happy??

😂

Floyd,

I always admire how clean and open your productions are. It's really highlighted here on this sad, reflective tune. Vulnerable vocal . . . and love your use of strings on this, particularly that cello. Impressed with your piano playing on this, as that piano really holds this song together. Excellent tune!!

All my best,

Deej

Floyd you really captured me on this one.
Outstanding vocal and lyrics as usual. But man you really set the mood with those backing tracks!
You have always had the perfect backing bands but this one is the best.
For me to say this to you is hard as you always submit fantastic songs but IMHO this one is your best to date.
Loved it.

Really lovely instrumentation, arrangement and mix throughout. VERY real lyrics. Excellent song.

Floyd...just a gorgeous, thoughtful and well delivered song...I love your piano and string work...man that piano sounds exquisite...well played and a super tone as well as the strings and when they're joined by that baritone electric, fiddle and cello...well you've created a beautiful palate for another one of your stellar lyrical and melodic creations...just beautiful man!

Yes, I no longer need the piano RTs that I had been requesting. I do still think they would be a Great add to the RT list...surely others could get good use of them...

Really nice... It immediately reminded me of Wildfire by MMM.

That is one good sounding piano VST. What exactly is it?

Very enjoyable song. Top quality all the way around.
