Does this happen to you nice folk? You are mixing a terrible song trying to "fix it in the mix" and after what seems like a thousand passes you just throw your hands in the air and say ENOUGH already!! You hate the song and never want to hear it again. So why post this if I hate it so much??......Well....I guess that even failure is a valuable lesson in itself. Izzy,
I feel you, man! What you describe is exactly how I feel about pretty much every song I try to put together. Countless hours creating and mixing to the point where all objectivity about the worth of the song is lost. I'm usually so done with the song that I rarely play it again on guitar (which is to say, there are many songs I've written that I've simply forgotten how to play). So I relate to your exasperation . . . but stay with it . . . on this song in particular because it has such a great feel to it.
I like the organ opening . . it's engaging, and then rolls into that piano and vocal. Some really nice touches in the production. The mix overall is a little high-end I think (though I'm far from a mix expert--see what others say).
The hook is catchy. It's got an 80's vibe. Listening as I am typing . . . I am really impressed with your arrangement and production choices.
Yeah, the more I listen, the more I really like this. My advice: Let the song sit a few weeks then come back to the mix. Sometimes you get so close to it that you can't see the forest for the trees. Come back with a fresh pair of ears a couple of weeks later. You'll be surprised by the adjustments you'll make.
I really like this tune.
Deej

Hi Deej
Thanks for sharing the pain of your mixing grind. It's comforting to know I'm not alone. Thanks also for taking the time and trouble to offer your analysis from a fresh ears perspective which is something that I was no longer capable of. The songs of yours which I have heard are very good so I hope you can take your own advice and re-visit your vault and give those songs a second chance. They must of had potential to get started. Finding someone to bounce one's ideas off is next to impossible so again, thankyou.

I dunno, Izzy, I think this is really, REALLY good. The playful treatment of a serious topic and zigzag arrangement reminds me of the best of 10CC (brilliant band). Super vocals and mix. I wouldn't change a thing.
Deej's advice to take a break from it is a good one. Often works for me. Sometimes not.

Hi Ron. I am truely amazed and humbled by your endorsement. I honestly believed it was an irretrievable mess! I don't take myself too seriously and the world is so crazy now that no topic is a sacred cow although I would never go anywhere near politics or religion. 10cc ? Aw shucks golly gosh.......I can't see but will take any comparison to those musical giants. Thanks Ron for taking the time to listen and your nice comments which have helped to heal my flagging ego.

Izzy, ain't nothing wrong with this song! I really like this as it stands now and I won't change a thing. Great vocal and lyrics. Super dynamics and instrumentation. Great backing band and groove. I love this one!

"even failure is a valuable lesson in itself" Well said, Izzy. Now, I have to ask what is it you don't like in this? Did you ever spend way too much time mixing only to give it up figuring it will never be right, and then listen the next day and deem in perfect? This would be the time for that. I really like the song AND the way you produced it. I love the opening, the whole band, the dynamics, the harmony and the vocals, and that very catchy hook.

Izzy...a tough subject but I really like the song...the energy is contagious...the variety throughout is captivating...lyrically well well written...the beginning is very cleaver and your transition from Here Comes the Bride to the "D" song is seamless...you don't have to listen to it anymore...we'll take over from here...loved it!

I'm pretty confident I don't have the best mixing ears (I really on BIAB and pre-sets in my DAW a lot) but this is a cool production, IMHO.

Hi, Mssr. Snape.
There's a lot to like about this song - a nice write, and some clever (and silly) bits of production that make this a fun listen.
I'm not sure why the title isn't "Overdrive" - I think it's a better title.
Glad you didn't give up on it. Sure, there are places it could use additional work, but sometimes it's best just to leave it alone for a while.
