I was rummaging around an old hard drive and found a BIAB MIDI track made 22 years ago for my daughter to sing to for a high school audition video. I remember making it on the same day, and assigned a few samples I had at the time. She passed the audition with the video, and had been learning to sing jazz all during her childhood with a lot of thanks to BIAB to practice to, which helped her to become a successful commercial singer in life. We usually use RealTracks these days, but I forgot how good the old MIDI was in the early days.

Wow, Thomas this is great! There aren't words in the English language to describe how awesome this is.

What a voice!! Incredible range, beautiful tonal quality.

And those tracks are great as well. I didn't realize samples were that good back in 2002.

Anyway man I've learned my lesson. I'm going to put my band in the box 2024 audiophile back in the closet and see if I can order an old copy of band in a box 2002!!!!

🙂

Hi Thomas,

Wonderful song, beautiful vocals and great video.

Yes BIAB has come a long way in the last 20 years but is still at it's very best with Jazz.

Best Regards
Nigel

Yeah, the samples were not that great in 2002 but I remember the piano I used (it was called Maljmso or something like that) and the other samples were just a cheesy synth pad and an electric bass circa 2000. I remember letting the MIDI of BIAB write the piano part, and then in a few spots I programmed the melody and/or a few licks with the same piano sound as BIAB generated. And, of course, with MIDI it was easy to program the tempo change at the end.

Of course, I didn't write the song. It is a classic by Thelonious Monk. I only posted this to show how good BIAB was even two decades ago.

The backing is just that when a face & voice that good hold the center.
The MIDI certainly isn't shabby - the samples are pretty convincing.

This sensationally holds its own right from the first note. Rachael's scat with vibrato is nothing short of amazing. What a voice!

Just...WOW! I mean the MIDI is more than fine, but your daughter's performance is amazing. Not surprised she's had a successful music career.

For some RealTrack instruments, most especially piano, I prefer to use the MIDI transcript and a sampled piano. It just sounds better to me. You've done a great job blending the BiaB MIDI piano with your manual entries. It's all very transparent.

THANKS for sharing!

I've never used the MIDI transcript from RealTracks, but I realize, looking at this old track, that MIDI played by samples, either from MIDI tracks or RealTrack transcript, is really useful for customizing a piano track. When you use the same sound patch for added elements like licks and melodies you can get a take more precisely customized piano part for your your song.

Thanks Firesong, for commenting on Rachael's voice. She was always a great natural singer from the age of about two or three. But looking at this old video I realize now how fantastic BIAB was, even in it's early days, as an EDUCATIONAL TOOL. I'm not a singing teacher myself, but from her very early age I was typing realbook chords into BIAB for her to practice to, and this played a huge role in her development. Singing along with recordings of other singers is great too, but limits you to exactly what they did, whereas having a backtrack with no vocals gives you the practice of shaping your own sound and performance in a way that only having a live band at your disposal can give.

I wonder if others, like music teachers, have found this function of BIAB useful (I imagine so), and what were the results in the development of children in musicianship that was never available before to this extent.

For the last decade we’ve regularly watched her on YouTube and we stream her audio — both with her band and solo. All the accolades she receives from around the world are richly deserved as she is a stunning vocalist. This production is a remarkable display of how great she is even during the formative years. And it is also an impressive display of BiaB during the earlier years.

You mentioned: “I wonder if others, like music teachers, have found this function of BIAB useful (I imagine so), and what were the results in the development of children in musicianship that was never available before to this extent.”

We’ve loved multiple genres for decades but our band years were bluegrass oriented. The discovery of BiaB allowed us to work in genres like Americana and Blues … in short it put us on a lasting and fun musical journey that continues to this day!

Thank you for sharing.

WOW is right!
Rachael is a fantastic singer.
I'm listening to her you tube songs right now.
The new BiaB MIDI files as well as the RT charts are fantastic.
Loved this song.
