Mañana is the first song I recorded using BIAB. I was sick last year and unable to write or record anything for over 8 months so when I started getting better I decided I wanted a fresh start with everything.
I reformatted my computer to windows 10, installed a new DAW, (Reaper) and added BIAB to my studio collection. My entire work flow was alien and new to me.

The origin of the song came from the tv show "Treme". One of the characters was explaining how things worked in New Orleans and said; "around here, mañana doesn't mean tomorrow, it just means not today". I loved the line and wrote this song around that idea.

I lost the majority of my singing range to throat treatments I had recently received and wrote the vocal parts with my lack of range in mind. It's not a great song or recording but it got me back in to the studio and for that I am forever grateful.

The arrangement is all BIAB except for my vocals. I mixed and produced in Reaper. I did the song in January and have since been able to finish another six songs. My voice is back to about 60% of what it used to be and getting stronger all the time. Thanks for checking it out and I hope you enjoy it.

Mañana
word and music by Jim Gear

Look at you
With no shirt and no shoes
Working on a nut brown tan

Your lizard like skin
Hides a devil within
The consumate American ex-patriot man

Mañana doesn't mean tomorrow
Mañana means just not today
If gotta bottle your sorrows
Take all your tomorrows
Mañana, Mañana away

Look at her
With her diamonds and fur
Trying so hard to fit in

A Renaissance girl
All alone in the world
Thinking 'bout the people
And the places she's been

Mañana doesn't mean tomorrow
Mañana means just not today
If gotta bottle your sorrows
Take all your tomorrows
Mañana, Mañana away

Look at them
Together again
At the end of the bar

Drinking cold gin
They're gettin high again
Kinda make you wonder
How they made it this far

Mañana doesn't mean tomorrow
Mañana means just not today
If gotta bottle your sorrows
Take all your tomorrows
Mañana, Mañana away

Mañana doesn't mean tomorrow
Mañana means just not today
If gotta bottle your sorrows
Take all your tomorrows
Mañana, Mañana away

If you can't face your tomorrows
Replace all your sorrows
Mañana, Mañana away

Lovely instrumentation in this song. Great vocals and harmonies.

First thought was Jimmy Buffet.... And this isn't too far from that mark. Nice song.

I feel you on the throat.... I had surgery that threw my singing and speaking voice for loop. I think I'm finally getting past it. That tube they put down your throat to keep you alive..... anyway,,,,,, yeah, I like the song...

Use left formatting.... it's easier to read than that centered stuff.

mañana doesn't mean tomorrow, it just means not today" I LOVE that, Jim. I'm with ya on the alien workflow. I've been reording since the 70s, but it wasn't until 2020 when I got a DAW and went the same route as you. The folks on THIS FORUM was definitely the biggest help in improving. This song is so good. I love the Buffett feel and the vocal. Excellent lyrics. Keep 'em coming, Jim, and stay healthy.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Firstly, glad you are improving.

"Mañana doesn't mean tomorrow
Mañana means just not today
If gotta bottle your sorrows
Take all your tomorrows
Mañana, Mañana away"

Loving the write, the sparse backing, the open mix and the soulful vocal.
All well done!

It all sounds good and melodic to me, Jim.
I can imagine the late Vern Gosdin singing this one.
Nice.

My neighbor had a Spanish gardener, and every other response to her requests was Mañana.
The other half was “not today, lady” smile
I like your song and its message.
Enjoyed the listen a lot!

This isn't really my style of music so I don't feel apt to comment other than to say that I'm commenting anyway because I like it, the lyrics really flow and I especially admire your voice.

BYOBand,
Thanks for having a listen. It’s really not my usual style either, (I normally an R&B/Funk writer) but this was all I could get out of my voice at the time. I had to work with the tools I had. Thanks again.

Jim, super song! Dunno how I missed it the first time around but glad it's back in circulation. Sorry for your health issues, glad you've gotten back to being able to record these terrific vocals. I get the Jimmy Buffet reference, but having lived in The Big Easy ("The Town that Care Forgot") this is absolutely a truly New Orleans sentiment. Nice job on the backing tracks and mix. Everything sounds GREAT!
