Hey, all. I bought a Microsoft Surface Pro X (refurbished) for BIAB so it can sit on my music stand. It arrived today. I installed my ultra pak 2021, let it do its thing, searched for upgrades to BIAB and installed the one it found, and then when I went to use it I immediately got an error saying something about an access violation as soon as the program loaded. It told me to save my work and I could keep using the program but this error appears whenever it loads. For a brand new computer this is pretty disheartening. Is there an easy fix for this? Pretty please? I don’t want to have to return the Surface. It’s just what I need and the speakers are incredible.

It should give a detailed error message and allow you to email it to PG Music Support. You might also be able to post the message here.

It might be related to the sound settings being used on the Surface Pro.

Is there a large message attached to the error that you could post?

OK, I think I found it.
1: Make sure BIAB is not running.
2: open your Preferences folder (eg C:\bb\Preferences)
3: create a blank text file called NoSplashScreen.txt
You can right-click in the folder and select New > Text Document, then name it NoSplashScreen.txt
4: Start BIAB

Let us know how you go.

It didn’t work. I don’t know if this makes a difference but when I reboot my computer and launch BIAB initially there’s no error. If I close it and launch it again, then I get the error message.

And it's the exact same error message that you uploaded previously?
Where it states Exception Stack, it shows this?

Hmmm.

Yes, it's the same error. I'm not sure if the NoSplashScreen, txt file trick worked with the 2021 version.

Please let us know if it does show the BIAB splash screen, like this:

Also, can you double check that the file is named exactly: NoSplashScreen.txt and is in the x:\bb\Preferences\ folder (where x: is the drive on your Surface Pro that BIAB is installed in)?

Yes, it shows the splash screen only it says 2021 and not 2024. The error comes after that.

I have it exactly as you said: c:\bb\preferences\NoSplashScreen.txt. The file had 0k. It was blank inside.

I’ve been planning to upgrade to a 2024 ultra pak to catch up with all of the latest developments and real tracks I don’t have. I just got an email saying the sale is on. Do you think upgrading it would fix this or would it carry over to the newer version? If it would fix it l’ll just buy it.

I’m wondering if this might be a processor issue because my Surface has a processor called a snapdragon 2 in it. The woman at BIAB assured me it would run and it does but not without this error. When I tried to install the Apple Music app this afternoon my Surface said the app was incompatible with my processor which is something I’ve never seen before and I had to return to iTunes.

Any thoughts?

It would also pay to check that BIAB did actually point to the most recent update for v2021. The information can be found when BIAB is running. It is under under "Help | About Band in a Box". The latest build is #845 and be downloaded from the below link if you need it.

I know that later versions of BIAB could overcome this issue with the inclusion of the 'NoSplashScreen.txt' file, but I don't know when that feature was implemented in the code.

Hopefully someone from PG Music will see this thread and jump in (Blake? Andrew?).

I do understand that this issue is resolved in the latest versions, but it would be best to get a comment from PGM before upgrading.

Otherwise, you could contact PG Music support with the error and hopefully they will be able to assist you to resolve.

Yep, it's build 845. I'll call their tech support when they're open and see if they can help me. The Surface is amazing so far except for the fact that it can't run Apple music because of its processor (that was a shock) but there's always iTunes. Thanks for your help, hopefully this gets sorted out.

Well, that’s encouraging. Do you know what made it stop? Getting a new version, maybe?

Well, I spoke with Nicholas from PG and sent him the error message. He said their tech support guys would get to the bottom of it, so here's hoping for a quick and easy solution. I just wanted to thank everyone for their help. I'll let you know if they solve it.

Hi. Tech support fixed it this morning. You were soooooo close. The text file needed to say NoSplashScreen. They sent me a text file with that in it, I put it in the folder and now it runs flawlessly.

Thanks again for your help!

Ahhhh, OK. Your computer is probably set to not show file extensions. So therefore the file might have been named 'NoSplashScreen.txt.txt' with the last '.txt' hidden.

Check your folder setup to see if this item is checked. It possibly is not:

Pleased you got it sorted.

AudioTrack, you really know your stuff. That's why the file that I copied and pasted over worked and the one I made myself didn't. I went to my recycle bin and found three files named NoSplashScreen.txt.txt. I'll tell tech support. smile

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe

This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
