I was planning to install the BIAB 2025 UltraPAK to my 1TB C drive from the supplied external USB hard drive ($25).
Is there any advantage/disadvantage in getting the external USB SSD drive ($45) instead?

Hello,
The SSD has data that is stored as flash memory whereas the HDD stores data using magnetic disks. This means that the SSD performance is typically more efficient and there are no moving parts that may break.

heres what i do..
1..when the pg ssd arrives i copy it to the fastest m.2 i can buy plus an enclosure.
cost 50 bucks for m.2 and enclosure.
2..then i hang the m.2 off usb and store away the pg drive for safety.
3..after minimal install pg option i do all my work off the m.2.
with the above set up i get blink of an eye pg content genning.
havent had a prob yet. note i'm not running a high end pc.
kudos to pg cos my 400 buck new win hold in my hand mini pc with ryzen is working grrreat running pg apps. bb boots in just 3 or 4 secs also.

Catherine Thanks Catherine. Are you suggesting I should run the program from the external SSD rather than install it on my C drive (SSD). If I do install BIAB to my C drive, is it much quicker to install from the SSD compared to installing from the HDD? Thanks, Mike

If you have enough hard drive space and even average internet speed, you don't need to buy PGM SSD. Just download and install on your main drive.
If you have previous version (2024) and are running it from computer (without external drive) with real tracks installed on your system, you will only be downloading and installing actual program update and tracks that are released in 2025

If you have previous version (2024) and are running it from computer (without external drive) with real tracks installed on your system, you will only be downloading and installing actual program update and tracks that are released in 2025 Thanks Rustyspoon but I have a new computer. I am trying to decide whether to: (1) download the BIAB UltraPAK to my 1TB C drive from the PG Music site, or (2) buy the HDD and install to C drive, or (3) buy the SSD and install to C drive, or (4) buy the SSD and run the program from that. I am curious as to how much faster the SSD would be compared to the HDD to install. Cheers, Mike

It’s an interesting question.
In my opinion the speed will not matter appreciably. It’s likely that the bottleneck here is the USB channel and a HDD drive might perform almost as well as an SSD for the one-time read. Looking at it on the other end, I believe that writing takes more time than reading, so when copying a large amount of files over USB, the read speed of the source drive is less important. Plus, this is a one-shot operation that you can just let run overnight.
I could be wrong of course. On my computer, copying the entire audiophile RealTracks folder from PG Music’s SSD to my internal M.2 drive took less than fifteen minutes.

If you are using program often and have space, I would suggest downloading and installing it on computer C:
Download it overnight and enjoy the program tomorrow.
You can then move compressed installation files to a thumb drive for backup purposes or delete them. Once you purchase the product, it will remain in "Your Products" available for download at a later time, if you would need to re-download them.
PGM hard drive is usually needed if:
1)Your connection is slow.
2)Not enough space to install it.
3)Using it rarely and prefer to run from external drive
4)Lazy to buy your own media to back up downloaded files
Personally, I don't like external storage to be hooked up USB ports 24/7.

P.S. I am sure that if you get the craving you can't resist for PGM drive at a later time, customer service will probably assist you if you would be willing to pay the price difference.

why chonk up drive C ??
i dont get it.
what are the advantages ??
i used to load up my C drive until now the m.2 over usb is so darn fast.
insane transfer speed for me.
and doing everything off the external m.2 over usb keeps everything tidy.
i wish pg would chime in (simon ??) and tell us what transfer speed over usb might cause a prob. i havent had nary a one.
blink of an eye gens.
also...and i dont know if this applies to win 11.
but it used to be a given...and we used to do this in tech industry also...
big recording studios used to 'never' do music production on the same drive that win resided on...ie C...cos it was found that sometimes win would 'interfere' with music production tasks executing.
so we used to use 2 drives...one for win and one for music production otherwise on occasion we found that we would get 'hiccups in the audio caused by win tasks on C doing their thing.
a reason why a lot of studios used always desktops/pc towers was one drive laptops being a problem due to the prob mentioned above.
so the big boys often used the big hp and lenovo powerfull xeon towers which could accomodate multiple drives while keeping on C only the win os.
i'll leave you good folks this thought...
when you receive your pg ssd (without disturbing any of the pg files) if you inspect it youll see exe program icons for both bb and bb plugin and rb one can just click on to bring up the respective app directly from the pg ssd.
(note...not the bb plugin dll meant to be a vst plugin in a daw but the standalone bb plugin exe...).
why would pg do this if there was a possibility of probs ?
so what i do is in win task bar i have icons for both bb and rb.
just click em' and either bb or rb boot up fast in just a couple of secs.
in summary...with blazeing fast usb speeds now (with maybe usb 4 on the horizon doubling speeds ?) why chonk up the C drive ??

You are not running/powering extra peripherals that are not part of your system.
External hard drives, while can, where never meant to be plugged 24/7.
USB ports are not as stable/reliable compared to internal hard drive ports.
Likely internal drive would be faster.
If you have more than enough space, why not?

i'm sorry mate but i gotta respectfully disagree.
following reasons...
1..i got various external periphs....
2..internal drive faster ? this 50 buk external m.2 is a speed monster.
3..just other day i dloaded bb new beta useing my net pc...useing a portable m.2 and attached to my production pc running external bb/rb copy m.2
and bam done lickety split by the pg installer.
gens blink of an eye. see no diff with useing c drive which is also ssd.
re internal c drive versus external m.2 hooked up over blinkin fast usb...
maybe pg can comment if c is faster cos i dont see it here from my tests.
and i have lots of things going on. running pg content off external m.2 i havent had one prob.
RUSTY...UPDATE.
just did speed tests here whether c drive or external 50 bukker m.2 both up to 300 mb/sec or more. no diff.
i then tested also over usb...same result no diff. here usb is blinkin fast.
in conclusion sorry but i dont get the advantage of chonking up the c drive.
so i'm gonna stay genning off the external 50 buk drive m.2.
frankly i think whether internal c or external ssd the tech has got sooo good not much diff imho. as i said pg can comment why there might be probs doing all off
external m.2 cos i havent had one hiccup.

Why in the world you would have "50 buk" internal drive if your computer has USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports?
Does your computer have "USB 3.2 Gen 2"? or just compatible and running peripherals at lower speeds?
Before you reply with something, that I am sure not only I have hard time to decipher, I suggest do investigation of your system and report with something substantial. While quite possible, I have yet to see a factory shipped computer with USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports and crappy internal HD.
Lets not jump into puffy philosophical debates. Use utility such as CrystalDiskMark to mark your speeds of both internal vs PGM external drives. When you have some meat on the bone, post back with screen shots. Maybe you are on to something.

Did you use a specialized utility, similar to a well respected CrystalDiskMark?
Please share screenshots if you did, I am sure some people here would be interested to learn.
It's a common knowledge that external USB drives are less stable performers... in most cases.
You didn't answer this: does your computer has USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports?
P.S. To me, it's no brainer. If my system has enough resources, why would I want something attached to computer that I don't need?

also used xtal mark utility...actually the figs i get were lower than more tests i did with xtal. some went up to 2500 mb/sec.
and thats it from me...anyone can check...all the specs for m.2 are on amazon for different manufacturers and amazon has 30 day returns.
if anyone doubts me just look at the various m.2 manufacturer specs on the net.
in summation my c drive and the externals are all darn fast.
AND before m.2 tech i was useing the older pre m.2 ssd tech external and genning off that. same deal...never a prob or hiccup.
maybe i dont get probs cos my production pc aint on the net...dunno.
but that debates for another day.
i think really pg should chime in and tell me i'm talking rubbish.
all i can relate are my experiences.

I did what you suggested and downloaded the program (and RTs and RDs) to my 1TB C drive - and I've still got 518GB free. Early days, but everything seems to work well. Nice. Congrats! I've tried Kontakt 6,7,8 with new VST3. Seem to work OK.
P.S. When you are scanning for VSTs for the first time, to avoid crashing, specify location of where you have your VSTs installed, otherwise it will try to scan whole computer for all DLL files...
Fortunately, VST3 seems very stable. There are still a handful of plugins it has issues with, but PGM should get these resolved.

i dont get it.
what are the advantages ?? Three times I've written; two turned into rants about USB so I scrapped them. For me the main factor is that I don't really have confidence in media on USB, especially when on a cable.
Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful.

What are XPro Styles and Xtra Styles PAKs?
XPro Styles PAKs are styles that work with any version (Pro, MegaPAK, UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition) of Band-in-a-Box® 2025 (or higher). XPro Styles PAKS 1-10 includes 1,000 styles!
Xtra Styles PAKs are styles that work with the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition of Band-in-a-Box® 2025 (or higher). Xtra Styles PAKs 1-21 includes 3,700 styles (and 35 MIDI styles)!
The XPro & Xtra Styles PAKs are not included in any Band-in-a-Box® package.

The Xtra Styles require the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition of Band-in-a-Box®. (Xtra Styles PAK 19 requires the 2025 or higher UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition. They will not work with the Pro or MegaPAK version as they require the RealTracks included in the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition.
