How do you guys ever remember where anything is? After re-downloading Native Instruments and a new IK Media B3 package, Studio One has scanned in 200 things.

Honest answer ... I have a spreadsheet with names, instruments, descriptions, host, website, installation method and installation location.
Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful.

Actually, I need to bite the bullet and do similar.
If I feel healthy enough, I would like to return to Europe sometime in the next few months. I am not sure where I will go, but I will likely fly into London, as there are many good connections to other cities in Europe. I like the south of Spain and the flights there are not too bad but it is a long way to the rest of Europe.
I have in mind to play in the street or some small bars. I don't care about the tip money but money is always good...lol
I miss going to Europe, I miss the culture. The United States is a good country to make money, but the lifestyle/culture here leaves much to be desired.
With COVID and the Cancer surgery a couple of years back, I have been stuck here for too long.
I always find plenty of fun musicians to hang out with in Europe. With my Texas accent, I can even get away with singing country in London...lol Even as bad as I sing!
Because my wife has gotten so busy and involved with her garden/greenhouse/orchid thing, she has agreed to let me loose on the street for a bit...lol, I would like to go visit Trev, but I don't think I could tolerate a flight to Melbourne.
Well, just a warning...lol

Actually, I need to bite the bullet and do similar. I concluded that I needed to bite the bullet, that's how/when I did it. Partly the problem was remembering exactly what I actually had. For some I had to go and find them. Once I started it didn't take all that long to do. There are lots of different characters in Europe. It's nice to travel to different places and meet the people.

I don't need to remember where it is, as long as my DAW can find it. I recently needed to transfer everything to a new computer. I first went through my Kontakt folder, since that's what most of my instruments are. Then I went through the VST/VSTi list in Reaper, which organizes them by company. After that, I visited the company websites, to see if they were downloaded or needed an installer. Once I was sure I could install everything, it was time to uninstall it and reinstall it on the new machine. For a hot minute, I considered putting all the VST/VSTis in the same place, but decided against it and let the installers put them all over the drive.

It's easy for me. After my last BIAB & Reaper installation I removed almost all of the VSTs I'd downloaded and transferred across a decade or two.
I retained all of the Reaper native plugs as well as about 10 others that are part of FX chains I've created or get semi regular/specialist use.
PSP Vintage Warmer 2, Density, a few Modern comps, the Deathcore decimator like comp, Vola2 for vocal levels, a Leslie simulator and such like - most of which were freebies.
I did keep the few VSTis/samples I have but there aren't but a few of those.
Easy to keep relatively tidy.

Several years ago, I organized my VST2 plugins, especially since at the time most apps supported both 32-bit and 64-bit version. However, all my VST3 plugins go to c:\Program Files\Common FIles\VST3. My configuration is: - c:\Apps\VST\32-bit\VendorName
- c:\Apps\VST\32-bit Only\VendorName
- c:\Apps\VST\64-bit\VendorName
- c:\Apps\VST\64-bit Only\VendorName
- c:\Apps\VST\jBridge\32-bit Hosts (64-bit Plugins) <- I only scan the "64-bit Only" folder
- c:\Apps\VST\jBridge\64-bit Hosts (32-bit Plugins) <- I only scan the "32-bit Only" folder
Depending on whether the DAW (or whatever music app) natively supports Bridged plugins, I can specify different combinations of the above to make all available to the program. This is less of an issue now that most plugins are VST3, but I keep the configuration for legacy purposes. I have an installation document I created for when I rebuild my computer occasionally, so I have it documented where to install each one. Of course, the irony is that I have a ton of plugins that I never use. LOL

Well, I don't.
When I want to add a plugin, I click on the channel plugin box. A window opens with a drop down for the audio plugs. It's listed by category. In each category such as VOCAL, GUITAR, MISC. it lists all the available plugs.
I use Sonar and I'd assume other DAWs also have something very similar.
Also, in the PLUG IN MANAGER, there's lists by plug in type that lists ALL of the plugs of that variety.
TBH.... I recently added a new plug to the machine and realized I had a boatload of plugs that were not being used. A recent plugin freebee had loaded every single plug that the company sold and they were all locked except for the one freebee. That one "free" plugin more than doubled the number of plugs in the list. My plugin scan took more than 5 minutes. I have it disabled on normal startup but I was adding something new. I let it finish and then went in and deleted the plug ins that I wasn't using and a few that were loaded as free trials that had expired. I also deleted the download files and managers for those particular companies so it wouldn't pop up and try to reload itself.
Doing that cleaned up the list and my scans are now under a minute.
Edit: If you honestly assess how you work and what you use 90% of the time, you will find that you really only use a small handful of plugs. If you paid a lot of money for a plug, keep it. If you got it free and use it, keep it. If it's in the rarely, seldom, or never used category, consider deleting it. But feel free to keep it for sentimental reasons if you wish. Every plug in the list gets scanned every time you run a scan. If that's not a big deal..... carry on.
