Hey there folks,

Say I have a sequencer or sampler loaded on to a blank utility track, and I want to render its audio output to another track. Or maybe I have something being generated off a MIDI chord track, and I want to bounce that audio on to a separate track? Is this possible?

Thanks in advance!

You should be able to solo the track then drag it to WAV DROP, then drag the green wav onto Biab and it should open up the import dialog.

I tried that, but it won't drag anything into the WAV drop (since it is not really generating audio from within the program, I'm assuming).

Specifically, what I'm doing at the moment is loading the Loopcloud Sounds plugin as a VST3 onto an otherwise blank track (no MIDI or audio). When I press play, the plugin starts running and playing back the audio of the loop I have selected. You can see the VU meter on the track moving etc. I want to get that output into another track within BiaB.

So the LoopCloud is a VSTi, try load Element VSTfx on an Audio track then add LoopCloud VSTi and try render, make sure you hook the audio out up to the output.
EDIT: as I remember you may have to add a small bit of blank wav file to make it an audio track to be able to load an fx plugin.

How do I get a blank audio track in BiaB? Should I generate an RT, and delete all its contents or something? Fwiw, I tried loading element onto a blank track with nothing generated on it, and now it won't generate and play anything.

You can import a small bit of wav or generate the RealTrack "Silence". It should be like RB you can set the track to Midi or Audio.

and you may have to enable EXT top left in Element if LoopCloud needs a play head sync.

< Is it possible to record the audio output of a track to another track within BiaB? >
Yes it is

<< I want to render its audio output to another track. >>
This is possible. Assuming you're playing the sequencer live and want the audio to print to another track

<<< I have something being generated off a MIDI chord track, and I want to bounce that audio on to a separate track? >>>
Yes, this is possible.

All three of the scenarios you describe can be done solely within BIAB. There are multiple methods. Two common ways are:.
1. Use a virtual cable
2. I have the RealTek sound card and it has the 'record what you hear' feature. Use Mute to silence everything but what you want to record from the Mixer.

Using either of these will do these task you listed. I tested this morning with rendering output from one track to another with audio, Midi super track, and Midi. No issues with any format.

Tried that, but the program would not "drive" the plugin with its loaded loop when pressed play (maybe because it was the FX version of the Element?). Even when I pressed play within the plugin itself, it also did not play. When I had the Loopcloud Sounds VST3 loaded, it played the selected loop when I hit play in BiaB as well as when I started and stopped it within plugin itself.

Thanks Charlie!

Regarding the method that you mute everything but what you hear,.. that seems a bit limiting because I want to hear everything in context before I render. The other method sounds very promising. Can you please explain what's going on in the second screenshot?

I'll look into the virtual cable thing ASAP.

Reaper should be able to render the LoopCloud output, you can Rewire Reaper as a slave to Biab https://stash.reaper.fm/v/44496/ReaTrak-biab-rewire-control-GUI.zip (just use the VST or VSTi in the zip).

In Reaper you can go to File> Render
choose selected track
Add rendered item into new track in project

Thanks, but once I'm in Reaper, there are a zillion much simpler ways I can accomplish this anyway (and so much more, which is why I'm so eager to use the plugin in Reaper rather than working in the main program. I tried using the plugin again today, and when I tried hit generate to send the audio and MIDI to Reaper for under a dozen tracks, it started generating dozens and dozens of empty MIDI items or something and promptly crashed my project).

In the second screenshot, I converted a midi track to audio in order to confirm the recorded audio was exactly the waveform as the source track. It was, other than seen in the screenshot, amplified a small amount. This is the same to live recording into the Mixer or moving existing recorded media to another track.

Rendering a mix in BIAB is creating a stereo mix of all unmuted tracks in the BIAB Mixer. That being the case, when you state you want to hear everything in context before I render. Simply record normally and if you want to move the live recorded track, you can copy/move or bounce or render.

BIAB is a very robust digital multi track recorder. In multi track recording, a bounce is playing previously recorded tracks by recording a mix of these tracks onto another track or tracks. Live instruments can be added during a bounce as well.

To my understanding, it seems you want to hear everything but only record your live playing. Is that correct?

Just send the Audio tracks and drag the midi tracks in if you need them.

Thanks Charlie, I guess I'm having trouble articulating what I'm aiming for, so I may try to record and upload a short video later explaining it in more detail within the program.

<< To my understanding, it seems you want to hear everything but only record your live playing. Is that correct? >>
If this is correct, you can record using input monitoring and headphones, pan everything except the track you want to record to the hard right. Pan the track you are recording hard left.

Record the track

This will record a stereo track with the instrument you're recording on the left track and all of the other instruments recorded to the right track. BIAB stereo tracks are LR mono tracks.

Open the recorded track in the Audio Edit Window
Select the whole track
Open the Edit button
Select Convert tracks
In the Convert tracks window, enter 200 for the left track and 0 (zero) for the right track and enter
This will create a centered, mono track of the stereo left track recorded instrument

This is one of several methods to bounce tracks in BIAB.

Tips: mute any unnecessary instruments and reduce the volume of the panned right instruments to reduce possible cross talk into the left panned track. Recording may take a bit of trial and error to get the setting exactly correct.

EDIT: We were posting at the same time. Yes, a video would be helpful.

Yeah, as I said, I'll try to post a video later, but in brief, say load I have a sampler like Loopcloud/Loopcloud Play/Waves CR8. These have access to libraries of loops I have on my hard drive that you can load up within the plugin. Then, when I hit play in BiaB, it "drives" the sampler despite the fact that there is no MIDI or audio on the utility track the plugin is loaded in and will follow the tempo (not sure what the technical term for this is, MIDI clock maybe?). You can also quickly load and swap loops while the whole thing is running. The advantage here over importing the loops into the BiaB loop folder (or adding a file association within the BiaB's loop utility) is that a) most of these loops are not Acidized, so you have to set the tempo for each one, b) it's slow and cumbersome anyway, especially if you are trying to swap and audition loops on the fly c) some of these samplers (CR8 especially) have all sorts of audio effects and filters the parameters of which you can mess with during playback to get all sorts of interesting sounds.

Now in a DAW, I could simply send the audio from the track the plugin is loaded on to an armed receive that will record the audio output of whatever I'm doing in realtime.I can even loop and record takes etc.
Or say I want to create a number of risers, impacts, etc in Soundfactory for transitions between various sections of a track, but each one is to be different so I would have to worry about switching patches and whatnot and also there's the issue of the resources having that extra track might take, and the ever present likelihood that at some point the extra tax on said resources might cause a crash. So I would prefer to have an audio track for all the risers and other transitional FX, after which I could get rid of the plugin once these are created and bring it back as needed if I want to add or change anything later.

Does that make more sense?

Yes it does. I don't have a sampler like Loopcloud/Loopcloud Play/Waves CR8, but it seems to me it's the same to BIAB as recording any live performance.

For instance, recording a keyboard live, the musician can push buttons, change styles, change the key, use registration buttons, change patterns but BIAB only records the output of the keyboard, I'm thinking it would be same for a sampler live performance. Make all the changes in the performance you want, but BIAB only records the final product sent to the output. What's being recorded will be audio and not midi data.

External sound sources can be recorded into BIAB using the Thru Channel or any track by setting input monitoring and arming that track.

If you make a short video, I can see your process and see if we can make it happen in BIAB.

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
