Hi,

I need some new styles that I've never seen before on BIAB but that I know are possible.

1. Styles for certain classical composers (Bach is the place I want to start.)

2. A variety of styles specific to Ambient music. (Think Minecraft.)

3. Styles specific to under-scoring for Film, TV, and Stage.

Others as needed.

I am looking for 1-5 very experienced BIAB stylemakers.

I have $$$ to pay.

This gig is very interesting and has a residual/royalty component to it.

Thanks,

PS Please contact me via email address in my signature in addition to positing here.

Hey, Steve,

Your post is intriguing but it generates far more questions. I'll start with three basics that anyone will need to know:

What is your primary OS? DAW? Level of experience?

Bach in primarily known for his SATB chorale writing.

This requires moving each of the four voices in a way that maintains intervallic relationships as well as striking and resolving dissonances carefully.

That's not really something that lends itself to a BiaB, so I'm not sure how you know that making such a thing is possible. eek

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your interest.

Call me at (Phone number removed by moderator) to talk this through.

My DAW is ProTools, Digital Performer, Cuba’s, or Logic.

Experience level was once sky high. I still know the tools just not always how to use them well anymore.

Would love to retain your services to create some the style types I need.

PS I have a kick-[*****] classical guy on my team. If you told me which “chunks” of data you needed, I could send you MIDI files to make into styles.

Thanks,

Steve Peha

Steve, there’s a separate forum for this where your post will be more likely to reach the PG Music staff you want. Go to https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=6&page=1

I’m not sure how Bach translates to BIAB but yes, sending MIDI of sample sounds will help improve your chances of getting your wish.

I see you are in the 919 area code. There's a few of us in the Raleigh area here.

I don't think BB will do Bach choral very well. It's designed more for modern music

Regarding 2 & 3 .... Again, there's a few new age styles that might work. But, in my experience, it's not going to give you anything that's really suitable for games and ambient underscore. For that, using your VSTs are going to get a much better quality than you will get from BB alone.

Any of the styles it does have sound a bit generic which is the kiss of death if you are trying to get commercial placement. I've used BB for several commercial placement uses but I did a lot of work on the tracks and they are not straightforward BB tracks alone.

I'm not saying that someone couldn't create a style that works but I think it might be easier in the long run to create the music in other ways

We’re dosing on Bach’s instrumental music: the inventions, the sinfonia, the preludes and fugues, the Goldberg variations, the musical offering, the suites, the concerti, etc.

I agree with you. But we are not creating music for placement or any other commercial purpose. We are creating “endlessness” as in Endless Bach as in “anyone could PLAY an endless amount of Bach-like music in a way that would recognized as… creative or generative, if you will. Ambient music is very easy to create. The trick is to have an endless generator feeding a filter of sorts that determines the sparsity of the ambient and non-ambient components. BIAB styles should be ideal because they allow for control of harmony (e.g. underlying emotion) in ways that algorithms can’t.

BiaB styles are neither endless nor generative. Any particular style has a fixed number of options it can choose from when presented with a chord of a particular duration. It's basically automated loops.

That's not to say that BiaB doesn't have generative features. For example, the Melodist feature will generate harmony and melody for various styles. I have no idea how it works, but I suspect that it uses a fixed number of canned phrases that can be adapted to the chord progression.

But I can't imagine anyone willingly listening to Melodist songs over an extended period of time.

Perhaps I just don't understand your use case.

I have a very unusual use case. And revealing it in its entirety would violate my agreement with my employer.

Suffice to say that while I agree with everything you say, you aren’t considering one thing: I’m using more than just BIAB here. BBIAB is just the easiest way I know to do the first part of a multi-part process.

Thanks,

Steve

I've left a message. We may have to play some phone tag around my consulting calls but I am curious.
