Could someone please explain how the "views" metric in the user showcase is calculated? Sometimes a poster may have thousands of
"views" and their next post may have a mere couple of hundred "views" even though the song is similar in style and quality.
just curious.

I don't have an exact answer, but I presume it is based on the interest generated by both the poster, the thread title, and where it is posted.

The number of views also depends obviously on the length of time that the thread has been posted.

I too would be interested to know more, if anybody else has more knowledge.

Also are bots searching and increasing the view counts?
I don't know.

Wild guess: The number of times the song thread is clicked from the Showcase forum.

I am not sure we can find an answer to this question. I went back through and listened to several people who have over a thousand views.

There are long-term posters of songs that collect a higher number of views because of their above-average musical skills, and they are well-liked by many of us. Most of the people who receive relatively large amounts of views are generally skilled musicians and skilled in the use of BIAB and other music software. There are only a few of us who are here all the time. We do not always respond to songs posted or even look at them even if we like the person who created them.

The only person who stands out to me is B D Thomas. His lyrical content is pretty consistent. The music is always well done. His use of software-generated vocals is first-class. The videos are well done. I think his subject matter represents the thinking of a large group of people and the whole package appeals to them. In other words, it has universal appeal to a certain large group that is likely much younger than many of us here. It also stands out as being significantly different from most things posted here.

I have always assumed that count was based on the number of "people" who log on to a thread.
It has always seemed strange to me that the forum shows 39,173 members and only a hand full of people who post anything.

In other forums here, there are very large numbers of people who log on to read about issues revolving around music software. 12,000 views of something Matt Finley posted about Encore.
Because it is possible to get to this forum by googling a single word such as Encore I assume that these number counts represent people who are not members of the forum. It does not seem likely to me that 25% plus of the 39,173 members would have any interest in Encore.

If it is true that some of the numbers generated are based on word searches on the Internet, I guess that could affect the numbers.

I forgot the name of the forum software. I assume the numbers generated are also a function of that software, but I don't know how much control over that function exists.

Response to any artistic endeavor most likely may be pretty variable in general.

What do you guys think?

Billy

EDIT: Just as a test, I typed in Encore software, and the P G Music forum came up. Also, I typed in "Is This Just a Dream", Mario's song, and it took me to the P G Music forum. So, word searches will get you here.

Views is how many people looked at that particular entry/thread, which means it interested them.

That's probably not an accurate count. Members can choose and set whether they are visible or invisible when online.

Views reflect the number of people who clicked on the thread.

I'm not sure if there's a duration factor or if you are counted a second or subsequent number of times after a certain amount of time passes. I know the OP can't click in and out repeatedly to bump their own numbers and stats.

Some people tend to garner higher visits and their posts tend to remain on the front page for weeks it seems while others barely crack 100 views and are second page in a few days.

It’s always an adventure about view counts, especially whether they are unique to each user or cumulative. There are a few threads I revisit. Is that one view or many?

About Encore, I used it since 1992 and was a beta tester for decades. It was one of the first decent computer notation programs and did have many tens of thousands users. When it was bought out two different times and allowed to deteriorate, there was a LOT of user frustration. Im not surprised that my post that there is renewed hope got a LOT of views and that in turn boosted its prominence in the search engines. It’s quite legit, I’m sure. We were told the original author bought the company back and is developing a new version. Since that date has slipped again to Winter 2025, there is renewed interest in any news.
