Chloe! Chloe! We (Janice, Bud & Peter) recently discovered on the net an image of a ragged (literally) century old piece of sheet music. Some research indicated it was scored in 1927 (PD world wide). The lyric was hugely different from the typical blues/jazz of the era, i.e, not a “mama misses you papa, please come home” thing.😀 Rather it was dark and moody. Interestingly it’s been rarely recorded with a vocal and most often as a bouncy 1920’s jazz instrumental leaving out the opening 16 bars. Knowing little music theory J&B were taken by how it was written in two keys … C major and the relative A minor. So we with big help from Peter put together an arrangement using those keys, a Janice melody and some lyric tweaking. If you made it this far we hope it works for you, your time to listen is appreciated and comments are welcome. And thanks to PG Music! The lyric is on SC. Janice: lead and BGVs > RODE NT1 > Scarlett interface > Izotope Nectar (reverb, delay, light compression) Peter: solo and fills guitar > whatever he does Bud: mix, mastering, etc. Piano: MIDI SuperTrack 2845 > Logic Pro Studio Grand > Ozone 11 imager > Waves CLA Unplugged Guitar Rhythm: RealTrack 565 > Logic Pro EQ > Waves Magma BB T Bass: RealTrack 534 > Izotope RX De-click > Waves Bass Rider > Logic ChromaGlow Drums: RealDrums PopRockShuffle > Waves CLA Drums Snare: (from above kit) > Waves Magma BB T > Ozone Impact > Neutron > Logic ChromaVerb Cymbals: (from above kit) Wind: Pixabay royalty free Mastering via reference song and tweaking: Ozone modules EQ > Stabilizer >
Impact > Imager > Dynamic EQ > Maximizer > Izotope Tonal Balance > Logic Loudness Meter

"An amazing piece of work" was my very first thought, but then I thought it sounded like a mother berating a child: "You're an amazing piece of work, you little pig-dog swine-hund! How many times have I told you not to poop into your brother's diapers?! You're old enough to use the grown-ups; poop deck. For Godsakes you're 12 already!" Okay I went a little far there. Back to the music! A brilliant discovery and totally new interpretation. Janice's unique plaintive vocals totally suit it, including the positive ending, plus I love Pete's guitar work. Really well done.

You three never disappoint when it comes to pro sounding songs. Janice's vocal is spot on Peter's guitar is the perfect accompaniment for her vocal - great chops! Bud's mixing and mastering is second to none. Another outstanding song - loved it.

Crying guitar behind the first lines REALLY makes the atmosphere perfect. Swampy without mud, haunting without ghosting. Those spirits moaning he ahs n oohs on the edges are perfect. There's nothing about this one that doesn't do the do - including the sonic sheen of Mr Merritt.

What a great find! And I love the production on this. Normally, I am not a guy that sweats over production that much as long as the song is listenable, but this really stood out to me. And of course, Janice nails it all shut with that gorgeous vocal. Loved the guitar solo as well. Great job by everyone!

Janice & Bud,
What an unbelievable arrangement and production. You have a knack for unearthing some real treasures.
NO ONE bends a note like Janice... This vocal is off the charts. It just completely wraps around the lyrics and melody with her unmistakable tone.
Love what Peter has done here as well. His guitar lines are always supportive, musical and never get in the way. And here they completely underpin the arrangement.
Bud, your production is always a highpoint for me. You make outstanding choices that never miss the mark.
Great, great stuff!
Bob

Man, you guys crush it every time! Spooky but fun as heck. Unique source material, killer vocals, sinewy guitar and snappy production. LOVE the swooping harmonies on the ooh/aah accents. Fastest 5:00 song of all time. Super tune. 2025 is looking really good on ya'll...

There's nothing about this one that doesn't do the do - including the sonic sheen of Mr Merritt. Ray, your time to write such a thoughtful review is much appreciated. From Janice’s intro “Chloe” with Peter’s fill that first Peter fill to the oohs and ahs you well described what we were hoping to accomplish. Thanks big time! And “doing the do” is definitely what it’s all about in a production. Thank you J&B

Man, I love hearing you three take these old and sometimes obscure songs and make them your own.
Excellent vocal of course, especially enjoyed the vocal arrangement, and Peter always delivers the goods.
Enjoyed!

J&B,
Great job resurrecting this old tune! The vocal style and feel is right in Janice's wheelhouse! Everything sounds excellent! Guitar sounds good and especially the piano! It was made for this track!
Thanks TB

Oh, yeah, a very different Blues theme, especially for the 20s and 30s recording sessions. ANd, man, you guys (as always) make it so much better --and not just cuz of the technological changes over 100 years, but with the magic that you 3 always put into these classics. Janice, you live over-the-top with your singing, and this one is quintessentially you.

... If you made it this far we hope it works for you When Janice sings, everything works! I don't know the original song, but you made a really cool song out of what you found. Very moody, with a lot of soul and perfectly arranged. Great work from everyone involved ![[Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]](https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/images/icons/default/thumbs_up.gif)
