Happy New Year! Roseville Fair is a fairly well known country song written and recorded by Bill Staines in 1979. Since then it has been covered by many artists, including Nanci Griffith. In 2003, a parody version was written by the late English comedic poet Les Barker and released by Mrs Ackroyd Band for their CD 'Yelp'. Mrs Ackroyd was the name of Les's cat. So this is a cover of the parody version and all of the instruments are BIAB 2017 Realtracks as follows: Hanging.Sty - Nashville Drums, El Bass 519, Ac Gtr 522, Ac Gtr 405, Ac 12 str Gtr 1119, Fiddle 618. Uppity.Sty - Banjo 4616 Cricket.Sty - Banjo 426 Allisr.Sty - Resonator RT408 The vocals are by me and I've added soundbites that I obtained from various free to use online sources. Finally, the voices of the three 'old folk' are from the free online text to audio website ( https://fakeyou.com). There's two Grannies and Abraham Simpson! It was good fun putting all this together over the last couple of months, and I hope that you appreciate the humour too. I can assure you that no banjo's were harmed in the making of this recording. I also recorded a live version of the song in October 2024 at the bottom of our stairs (just me and my guitar). If you are also interested in hearing this, it can also be found on my YouTube channel. Cheers, Andy.

Enjoyed your vocals a lot, and the dual banjo backing is a lot of fun. There are some forum rules about cover songs found at the top of the User Showcase forum that may or may not apply. I could personally care less though. Liked your song!

Nice sounding production. Good vocals. I'm not familiar with the tune, but I sure like your version of it.

Thanks DC Ron. It was a fun song to work on. I wasn't quite sure whether I could post the YouTube link on the forum or not tbf. The audio currently exists only as part of a YouTube video which passed their checks and was allowed onto their platform despite me not owning the rights to the audio. I have uploaded previous videos to YouTube containing cover songs and none of them have been taken down, but YouTube have notified me on a couple of occasions that copyright owners have identified content which they had not permitted me to use, although in each case the copyright owner chose to monetize the video for themselves rather than block it or request it's removal, and obviously YouTube were quite happy to do that as they profit from it as well. It can often be difficult to determine what content is allowed and what isn't in videos, but I'm not looking to make any financial profit (I don't monetise any of them), and I did notice that there were already quite a lot of cover versions of 'Roseville Fair' on YouTube before uploading my video, so I know that I'm not breaking their rules. However, I appreciate the fact that PG Music has its own rules which I respect, therefore I apologise if I've contravened them by posting the video link here, and I fully understand if this post is removed from the user showcase forum.

Hi, Andy. I'm not familiar with the song or the parody, but nice cover. (OK, I checked out Bill's version, so that's no longer true). Ron is referring to the rules posted at the top of this forum. The first rule is: - The songs must be originals, no copyrighted or "cover" songs. You must have all of the rights to the songs.
Since Bill (RIP) wrote the song in 1979, it's still under copyright, so you don't own "all the rights" to the song. What YouTube thinks about it doesn't really matter. The song reminded me that I left my banjo in the back car, so thanks for that! I was worried about perhaps someone stealing it, but you know the joke: I left my banjo on the backseat of my parked car and when I came back I found the window smashed and three other banjos were thrown in.

Thanks David. On reflection, I agree that I should not have posted the link to a cover song on the user showcase forum, although I notice that some others have done so. I've now removed the YouTube link.

Hi Andy,
I know the tune. It is some time ago, but it was even sung in Dutch. Can't recall that title and if that was also the funny version. Your vocals are very good in this one. Did you also yell in the background, or was that the family? Enjoyed it!

Thank you, Hans.
I wasn't aware of a Dutch version, but I'm not surprised because the song seems to have universal appeal. It appears to have been covered by quite a lot of artists, but I must confess that I'd not heard it until last year when I witnessed June Tabor sing it live. She sang the parody version acapella style, and I laughed so much that it inspired me to have a go at recording it myself. In introducing it, she said that it was a tribute to her friend Les Barker who sadly died in January 2023 (he wrote the parody version).
In answer to your question: No, it wasn't me who did the 'ouch' yell at the point where the rosewood chair smashed into his skull. I must have auditioned around 20 online audio yells until I found the one that I was satisfied with, and by that time my wife was becoming concerned at the amount of yelling that was coming from the spare bedroom where I have my home studio. lol.
Cheers, Andy

Andy, I didn't know the song or the parody but this version did put a smile on my face. Excellent work!

Andy, please let me sit at the cool kids table. haha My first time to this post, you had already removed the link. Still, I searched your sites but couldn't find it. Today I notice Mario got to hear it ---somewhere. So I searched even more thoroughly (albeit without real hacker skills), and still casn't find it. Please help --even if in a PM.

Thanks Mario. Glad you liked it. Banjo's aren't really so bad, are they?
