Henry's material is incredibly professional. He produces interesting videos that are suitable for beginners and advanced users alike.
He is a real asset to PG Music.

What a banded box may look like
I like Henry's stuff, but Banded a Box??

Attached Files (Click to download or enlarge) (Only available when you are logged in)
Banded Box.jpg (182.53 KB, 148 downloads)

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I don't like that he uses outdated UI instead of minimalistic. Lets be truthful, very outdated. That alone will steer away potential fans. I tried explaining that to him. Ohh well, it's his gig. Otherwise, he teaches well.

As a new user I absolutely agree that the UI is extremely outdated. What kept me away from the software more than anything was the name. Any time I heard some reference “Band in a Box” I wrote it off as something for beginners. I’m extremely embarrassed I did that lol. The functionality completely makes up for those things. Wish I had jumped in years ago.

As a new user you may not yet know there are two interfaces at present, the very old style in Henry's videos and a newer, more compact style that suits me better. Switch between them with Ctrl-T.

You are certainly not the first person to suggest that the name is less than ideal. That name might have worked 30 years ago, but now? Not so much.

Funnily enough, the name is exactly what brought me to the program well over over a decade ago!

Basically, I was looking for a program to generate backing tracks in various styles based on chords that I entered so I could develop better bass lines and explore different ways I could approach tones based on the approach and destination chords, measure lengths etc.

I remember thinking to myself, "you know, it would be really awesome if I had a band in a box that I could just enter a bunch of chords and have them play in any style I like." A quick Google search later and the rest is history!

I realize that my primary use case for this program is not the same as for most BiaB users in all likelihood, but as a tool for practicing and learning various instruments it is a criminally undiscovered gem to millions of potential users out there.

Sadly, the quality of the notation (at least the guitar and bass tablature) has increasingly degraded over the years IME, but that's another story...

Attended a birthday party for an guy I just met recently. He is a well know musician in the chicago scene. Lot of folks form the music community present to chat with at the tables. I dropped BIAB's name and no one indicated they had ever heard of it! These were professional musicans and studio folks. This was not a surprize to me.. how about you?

That’s such a great story! For me it’s very similar, I’m studying Jazz theory to better my lo-fi, chill hop beat making sensibilities. Currently going through Ted Greene’s single note soloing material which has been a real game changer for me. Band in a Box allows me to set up chord progressions so I can practice this material. I absolutely agree that BIAB is a tool many are completely oblivious to but are probably very much looking for.

Almost no one I’ve ever worked with has ever heard of it. I came to it via the BIAB plug-in in Finale (32bit only through 2014) that saved me a lot of time when doing commercial beds and the like. Later, I decided to try it for vanity projects that I was producing for others—again, it was a tremendous time saver that allowed me to offer services that were more affordable.

I don’t use it much in my own music other tan now and then but I like the results when I do.

"and no one indicated they had ever heard of it! "
I guess, in part that's the price for disbalance between Content & Features vs Workflow & UI.
But hey, there is a good chance it might change for the better. Currently, a rare occasion / opportunity exists, where PGM is gathering feedback from users on UI/Tools/Menus, etc. If you have a reasonable suggestion(s), please head over to Wishlist section. Upper pinned threads:
