This song is inspired by the madness that seems to be happening on a global scale these days.

Audio only version: Runaway Train (on ReverbNation)

The Band:

4710:Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm SoulJazzBluesyFunk Ev 110

I used EZDrummer3 to build the drum and percussion tracks

I'm playing the two guitar parts and Marty Straub from BabuMusic is on Bass Guitar

Mixed in Reaper with plugins from Waves and Izotope, mastered with Ozone11. Guitar tracks are going through the S-Gear amp sim.

Runaway Train (2025 Dave and Kathy Bell)

(V1)
Fast train rolling down Chicago line
Big change coming, you can see the sign
Steel wheels screamin' down the track
Gotta move forward, can't ever go back

Runaway train can't slow down
Rollin' fast from town to town

(V2)
Empty bottles and shattered dreams
Mind's on fire silent screams
We've lost our way in this purple haze
Caught up in the end of days

Runaway train can't slow down
Rollin' fast from town to town

[Bridge]
Smoke and mirrors hide the pain
Hopes and dreams going down the drain
Can't escape the bitter past
Just how long can this madness last

(V3)
When did life become this speeding train
Everyday the more speed we gain
Can't last forever, just do the math
How do we get on a slower path?

Runaway train can't slow down
Rollin' fast from town to town

Dave,

I think this captures the chaos and then some... A great rocking blues protest song.

Your guitar & vocals, Marty's bass, overall instrumentation and the mix are superb.

I'm a fan!

Hi Dave and Marty,

A cool song, with -in a way- disturbing lyrics, or a disturbing train, I might call it.
Wonderful solo, a solid bass play and good vocals, so, very entertaining!

Nice day,
Hans

Great song and as always superb guitar work. But how come your "Runaway Train" is slower than my 2 train-themed instrumentals? laugh Don't want to get to End-of-Days station too early? In the UK the most common reason for late arrivals or cancellations us "leaves on the line". Though the oddest announcement I ever heard at a station was "The train now standing on Platform 5 will be returned to the railway line as soon as possible." laugh

Hi Dave and Kathy
A good solid pace (BPM) to this one which gives the parts room to move. As others have said, solid bass work and keys sitting and supporting the rest. I thing the lead solo can then 'soar' above the band, which gives it focus. I love the 'smoky' vocals. The chorus chords (C - B7 - Em if I got it correct) are really attractive to listen to, and what the ear is seeking for completion of each verse - a great resolution to each.

Regarding the lyrics, the theme is a great metaphor and can be adopted as the listener pleases. It could be about modern societal life, social media, addiction or mental health, or even political commentary or a bad relationship going wrong. Although, your last verse hints at the speed of life.

Makes you want to pick up a guitar and play along!

Andrew

You guys are playing great here (as usual)! Cool tune, coolly sung, with a sizzling vibrancy. Like where you have the BiaB piano in the mix, too. Super job!

Dave, I like the multiple guitar sound of the signature lick. It really twists the ear and sets up a sinister mood. Sung very well, great bass from Marty and a standout solo and production . Thoroughly enjoyed as I always do with your pro grade material.

Yeah, madness is everywhere -- I blame overpopulation-- but no one likes to think of the solutions. Songs like this are surely the best salve for the sane ones to persevere. Thanks, Dave & Kathy, and thanks for letting me play along. What a treat this song is listen to, but the need to write it is sad. It's also sad that we only play these songs once. Man, Dave, you can play, and you have the perfect voice for these songs. Every song you write has that (often nasty) effect of staying with me all day. That is a special gift to have as a songwriter.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Dave and Kathy,,

Smokin' hot Blues that describes the absurdity of today's world.

Those guitars of yours know how to play! Yeah, those licks cut through like a sharp knife through warm butter. Love how your voice hovers over the scene like an ominous warning. And that Marty guy - well, he ain't to shabby either. This is a really cool song!!!

I was getting ready to post a song of the very same name, and then I saw your post. I'll let mine simmer for a couple of months and then post it. It's a much different song than this one. Yours deserves the spotlight at this time. It's a great listen!@

best to both of you,

Alan

Well I would never claim to be a great vocalist 'cause I'm not, but at least there is no doubt that it is me singing and not a synth grin

Thanks for your kind words and support, Torrey, very much appreciated.
