Hi folks! I export individual tracks as .wav to import into Cakewalk - usually exported mono and normalised per track. When it comes to drums, do you export as mono or stereo, and why? I am normally leaving the mono drums track panned centre, as I do with the bass also. Are there any other tips you have about optimising the drums when exporting, or even what treatments you normally give the drum track imported into your DAW?I did a search and found these related posts: Drum stems Converting a BIAB drum track to General MIDI Normalize .wav export in biab or in DAW

Hi Andrew.
I always let BIAB determine how to export it. Some tracks (e.g. piano, drums, many guitars, etc.,) are recorded in stereo. I keep these as stereo when I export them. Other tracks (e.g solo instruments such as clarinet, violin, some guitars. etc.) are recorded in mono. For these tracks, I always export as mono. I also export my tracks centered and without reverb or tone changes because I like to add those in my DAW. If you use, "Save as | Save song as audio," BIAB will automatically export tracks (mono/stereo) as they were recorded by the original musicians who created the Realtracks.

Andrew, I import the drum track to my DAW as a stereo .WAV file. The kick is always centered, and the toms usually have a nice stereo image, which meets my basic expectation. Once in DAW, I used a Stereo One drumkit preset that has multiband compression and EQ to help the drums sit in my mix better and give them a bit of lift. I'll tweak the EQ if needed, usually to tame the upper frequencies.
I'll do the same thing with BiaB percussion loops when used.
Like Noel, I export drums and everything else centered and without reverb or EQ. I've used normalization for .WAV export at times in the past, but usually don't. I don't use drum stems much either, but if I did I'd probably start off treating them the same as a complete kit and adjust from there.
Have spent many years using MIDI drum kits, and have several very cool sounding drum VSTis, but find using BiaB drums as stereo .WAV files satisfies my musical needs 99.9% of the time while being far more efficient with my time.

Are there any other tips you have about optimising the drums when exporting, or even what treatments you normally give the drum track imported into your DAW? It depends on whether you're exporting drums as a single mixed track or if you're exporting each drum stem as separate tracks. For a drum mix, I export in stereo. For individual stems, I export "auto", meaning BB will automatically export in stereo or mono depending on each stem track - and from here I will pan appropriately. Overheads are typically stereo (though some stems separate the left and right overheads into separate tracks, and some have an overhead ribbon which is often mono). Room mics are sometimes stereo too.
