Speak to Me

A she-loves-me, she-loves-me not style lyric. This is a demo of the 2025 _Clack RealStyle, with no other instruments played. The style is simple, but quite lovely to my ears. (Bravo, PGMusic!) This is also a test of how far I could push my vocals, so...well, it is what it is. I'm overall ok with the vocals, with my favorite line being the very last one. Skip to the outro if impatient. smile But I do sincerely appreciate every listen and every comment, positive or otherwise. I find this forum so VERY instructive. THANK YOU in advance!

Lyrics: R.W. Davis
Music, arrangement, vocals, mix, master: Me

Listen now, I’ve got somethin’ that I have to say
I can say it now, or save it for a rainy day
It’s all jumbled up in my head
Not like the words you had said
I tried to write it down before, but then my fingers bled

Listen now, I know you’re in a hurry to go
I just need a minute or two to let you know
About these thoughts up in my head
Please don’t leave me here for dead
I gotta live my life in colors other than blood red

Speak to me
Cuz I’m havin’ trouble gettin’ this outta my mouth
Speak to me
Cuz I’m simply drownin’ in all of this self-doubt
You can hear me
Tryin’ to say somethin’ more
Random words like
Puzzle pieces on the floor
You can hear me
Singin’ a song half-sung
Just scattered thoughts
Trippin’ over my tongue

Listen now, I guess I’ve fallen in love with you
I can’t say it out loud, and I don’t know what to do
I can maybe write it down instead
Though it might just be misread
But like a fragile sweater, I’m just pullin’ at the thread

Speak to me
Cuz I’m havin’ trouble gettin’ this outta my mouth
Speak to me
Cuz I’m simply drownin’ in all of this self-doubt
You can hear me
Tryin’ to say somethin’ more
Random words like
Puzzle pieces on the floor
You can hear me
Singin’ a song half-sung
Just scattered thoughts
Trippin’ over my tongue

Speak to me
Speak to me
Speak to me
Speak to me
Speak to me
Speak to me...

Ron...you're right about the style choice it does a great job and is full and really all you needed...there is always something about your songs that have that familiar "DC Ron flavor" (a good thing by the way)...I think your vocals were super and the harmonies were ultra cool...just a nice soft rocker with a really nice groove...I enjoyed it very much!

Hi Ron!
I loved the chord changes in this one - intrigued what they were and I'm going to pick up my guitar to work them out. Vocally, the octave doubling in 3rd verse was really effective and help the song build with this variation in texture.
This song is quite an ear-worm! Well done!

Hi Ron,

First off, I'm officially launching a campaign: #RonSingMore. Seriously, your voice is like a buddy you didn't know had a hidden talent – unexpectedly awesome. The vocal doubling is so effective it's practically cheating. It's like you cloned yourself, but the clone can actually sing.★
That backing, that Clack RealStyle business... it's got that "Hand in My Pocket" Alanis vibe, but less angsty and more... well, more you. It's like Alanis took a chill pill and decided to back your track. It chugs along so smoothly, I almost started humming along... almost. 😏

Now, the real mystery: why the last line as your favourite? Is it some kind of lyrical mic drop? Are you saving the best for last, like a perfectly aged wine? I need answers, Ron! ❓

But honestly, I'm digging the whole package. The mix is tighter than a hangman's knot . The melody's catchy enough to be a public health hazard. Vocals? See aforementioned #RonSingMore campaign. Lyrics are on point. And the production? So uncluttered, it's like Marie Kondo organized your song. ( I follow her tips).

My ears thank you!

🙃

Now that one is super catchy. Stuck in my head now and most likely for the rest of the day. It spoke to me. Very well sung and the harmonies were great and at the right level. Well mixed and arranged. Sounds great,Tom

Hi Ron,

Nothing wrong with your vocal, sounds good to me, especially liked it when you doubled them. Good song, nice groove, very hooky. Very effective ending!

Good stuff, enjoyed.

Ron,
Style works well. Excellent vocals, lyrics, especially phrasing. Fantastic job on choruses, very effective. Neat talk back outro. Suggestions... maybe slight de-esser on vocals and electro rhythm guitar on choruses a bit louder. Fun listen and thank you for sharing.

Misha.

Clever. I love your band...the sound is so round and full. Your voice sounds good to me. I wasn't sure about the phrasing at first, but it got really catchy to my ears.

Great song! Love that rhythm section, plus I think you've done incredibly well on the vocals and harmony vocals. Also a brilliant theme re the lyrics.

Thanks, Dan! Am not at all sure my "flavor" is necessarily a "good thing" but I appreciate the positive thoughts. Am much more at home behind the console or off to the side than up front, but sometimes you just do what you have to do. smile

Thank you, Andrew. Let's see, the changes are G-Dm-F-C-G-D-C-Bb on the verses and G-F-G-D-G-Bb-F-G on the chorus. You'll hear a lot of variations like add 2 and sus 4 especially on the acoustic. I like the disorienting character of the Dm a lot.

Thanks for the octave doubling observation. Tried to get the vocal arrangement to slowly build throughout then release on the outro.

I do try to make the songs fun to listen to (and best case sing along with) so THANKS as well for the ear worm comment...that's a compliment for sure.

Very cool. Ron. Your vocal is really well done, and I like the high guy too. Fun lyrics and I like the sing-along melody that chops up the words in a way that provides suspence. I like it a lot. Yeah, those synths are tough to beat, but I still prefer the real you.

Enjoy whatever happens!

This is a really professional sounding song, well written, well sung, well arranged, well produced. Reminded me of Pixies, maybe the heavy guitars in the chorus and the strong chord progression...

The lyrics are great, universally relatable and feels like written from the heart! "You can hear me/Tryin’ to say somethin’ more/Random words like/Puzzle pieces on the floor" and "Please don’t leave me here for dead/I gotta live my life in colors other than blood red", clever songwriting!

Enjoyable melody, that "speak to me" is really an earworm.

The BIAB style fits perfectly with the message and those instruments are mixed so well with the vocals, everything sounds very balanced.
Excellent singing with perfect harmonies, you have a great voice... and yep, that ending is great!

Janne

Izzy, well, your post is WAY over the top, but I DID laugh out loud more than once. THANK YOU for the positive review and vibes.

The "last line" comment is just the lingering "Speak to me" lyric sung over the final held chord. Improvised that and it turned out better than I'd hoped. smile

I’m guessing that the whole point was to create a backdrop for your vocal “expansion”, and using a simple style with lots of repetitive elements was an excellent choice. From the listeners POV my attention was clearly focused on the vocal, which is what I think you were after. I esp liked the octave unison singing. Thanks for doing this, it is a motivation for me to try harder on the vocal side of things, and I really enjoyed listening!

Thank you, Misha! Great suggestions, too. I did use Melodyne's surgical de-esser on individual syllables, but can still hear phrases I wish I had hit harder. Funny what you stop hearing after a while.
