Youtube: Somewhere Soundcloud: Somewhere Written in April 2022 in response to the songwriting challenge to use the chord progression Em - Am - C - B. The riff used a technique I had learned on another song, and the lyrics were an attempt to make the end of the last line in verses 2 and 3 become the beginning of the first line in the chorus - in a venn diagram sense. On this recording, I played all instruments except piano, drums and horns, which were all generated in Band In A Box. I first recorded it a couple of years ago and came back in December 2024 to add more vocal layers and supply the bass guitar. ****** Song Summary ************* Style is _SOL60HS.STY (60s Soul w/ Horn Section) RealTracks in style: 1569:Bass, Electric, Soul60sA-B Ev 110 RealTracks in style: 1578:Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm Soul60sA-B Ev 110 RealTracks in style: 1572:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm Soul60sHighA-B Ev 110 RealTracks in style: 2110:Horn Section, Background, R&B Ev16 110 RealDrums in style:Soul60sTamboEv^1-a:Snare, HiHat , b:Snare, Ride LYRICSINTRO/RIFFVERSE 1Some times, it’s great to be heading somewhere A sense I exist just ‘there’ It’s a wonderful state to be in my dear Like I’m living without a care RIFFVERSE 2At other times my memory starts to linger I’m a wizened cultural thinker But I’m growing reluctant to ring her Just in case she’s still doing her … CHORUSHair … it’s flowing down to me, like the Zambezi to the sea Her mind can touch the moon, like water reflects her mood RIFFVERSE 3Often times I’m slipping into despair Like tactical nuclear warfare But you reach down and pull me up for air, and I look deep into her … CHORUSEyes scream … so many different flavours, it’s a shame not to try them all … Of me and all of you, but I’m wondering how her… Hair … it’s flowing down to me, like the Zambezi to the sea Her mind can touch the moon, like water reflects her … Eyes have so many different shades, it’s a wonder to see them all Of me and all of you, but I’m wondering if it’s too soon. Andrew, very nice. Some very cool lyrical and musical twists. Reminds me of Arthur-era The Kinks (which I adore). Love the main riff. Very well played and sung, and nice filling in by BiaB. Well done!

Hi Andrew,
You made a very nice song. The vocal harmonies are good. Your vocals are good too (maybe a little more reverb?).
The song itself could use some variation in the build, like a transposition or so. That can bring some more excitement in it. But that's what I would do, others might disagree on that ;-)

Catchy tune. Nice riff too that holds it together.
Clean mix.
Sometimes all you need is a repeating progression and a riff.

Andrew, super groove Great vocal I got a Kinks vibe also, and that is a compliment Great mix A fantastic flashback to the 60's!

When I saw the songwriting challenge chords at the beginning of you post, I immediately went over to my piano. I like the sound and think I can come up with a song too. I will file that away for the future.
Cool overall sound. I like that guitar riff, by the way. I love this line "Eyes scream … so many different flavours"...that's great. Your music paints many different flavors with sound.

Great funky groove on this song, Andrew. I also love the theme as I've always felt of our Beautiful Earth and only in, but not of, the artificial manmade world.

WOw, Andrew, what a great production. I get what you mean about those cool connections between verse and chorus lyrics, and then continue the word-play cleverness with eyes scream... Love the riff too.

Kinks! Yes, Mario. Thanks for saying that. I heard it and couldn't put the name to it. Love that riff, Andrew.

Andrew - is the vocal meandering in the stereo image? Could be my set up or, perhaps the level balance between the layers. COOOOL melody - clever lyrics. There's a stylistic touch of the Lightning Seeds in the melody.

Do you know the British band, Madness? This reminded me of some of their songs. Musical challenge overcome, and how ... I'm now going to sing that riff all day long, lol This is usually not my especially favourite genre, but you've created very good music, here, so nothing else matters in my view. Well done!

Andrew - is the vocal meandering in the stereo image? Could be my set up or, perhaps the level balance between the layers. I reckon you’re correct Ray. When I listened before publishing, I thought “Did I just hear it go from left to centre?” but thought I was dreaming. This was an earlier recording of vocals in Reaper which I re-recorded in part, so obviously didn’t get it all made uniform. I’m away when posting so didn’t have access to adjust. I’m not familiar with the Lightning Seeds, but will now need to give them a listen. Andrew D

Hi, Andrew. Sounds good! The riff works well, and the horns are cool. I like how you shift to avoid the expected rhyme/work going into the chorus. Clever! Fun listen.

Andrew,
This is a really cool song - sounds from the mid to late 60s. At that time, I listened primarily to country (I played lead guitar and that's where the money was where I lived (St. Louis, Missouri). But I did catch some of the rock from time to time.
The musical riff is catchy - a real earworm!
Much enjoyed!!!
Alan
