My New Years resolution... try to record at least 1 song per week.

This week... "Chunky Occasion", by me, Steve Mohacey. I wrote this song back in 2000.

This is what happens when you combine a "wah" pedal with saxophone. Always LOVED hearing Michael Brecker use a wah pedal. Probably should have played the melody without the "wah", but in for a penny, in for a pound.

I hope I make you smile with this one.

Memo: A classic Motor-Town funk style with clavinet and FunkSwingTambo RealDrums. Other instruments are electric bass and two electric guitars. -Examples: Isn't She Lovely, Revelation, Genre "Intensity" Score=60/100
_ANARBOR.STY. Ann Arbor Motor Town Funk Swing
All RealTracks. Quintet. Tempo=120 (100-145)
Instruments: El.Bass, El.Piano, El.Guitar, El.Guitar, Drums
RD: FunkSwingTambo: a: Snare, Kick b: Snare, Open HiHat :Michael White
RT2362: Bass, Electric, MotownFunkyTriplets Sw 120 , Steve Mackey
RT2363: Piano, ElectricClav, Rhythm MotownFunkyTripletsJohn Sw 120 , John Jarvis
RT2164: Guitar, Electric, Rhythm NewOrleansSwinginPop Sw 130 , Rob McNelley
RT1585: Guitar, Electric, Rhythm TexasBluesRockShuffleSol Sw 130 , Sol Philcox (muted)
RT4506: Piano, Electric, Rhythm 70sEZSouldSwingPhaser SW120

Saxophone was recorded using a Sennheiser 441 with the "FETHEAD" to boost the gain. The Sennheiser 441 is a dynamic mic. The Fethead gives it a 27db bump via the pre-amp built into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Gen 4. Dynamic mics do not require phantom power. The FETHEAD uses phantom power to boost the gain and just plugs into the XLR out on my mic.

Digitech VX400 Vocal Effects Processor and a personal custom wah pedal setting.

Backing tracks via Band In A Box 2024 ultrapak for Mac.

Recorded in Logic Pro 11.

Selmer Reference 54 Tenor sax. Mouthpiece- Dave Guardala MB1 (handmade). Reeds- Boston Sax Shop Black Box 3.5 (BEST REEDS EVER!!)

Filmed on iPhone 15 Pro Max.

This video was edited using Final Cut Pro

Yeah, pretty much an instant smile imagining myself dancing down the street in New Orleans. That bass nearly killed me!!! Love that sound. I could be wrong but I thought I heard some clipping here and there.

BYOBBand- yeah, I think you are right. The "wah" effect on the vocal effects processor was pushing sound a little hot. Thanks for listening!

Ha! Now THAT's a sound I haven't heard before. The fast wah envelope is offbeat but appealing, and works really well with your composition. And LIVE, too! Kudos for this. smile

I was thinking more of a "chicken" sound :-) Thanks for listening.

I have heard Michael Brecker and Jeff Coffin use the "wah" sound before. It's a neat effect. Not something I'd want to use very often, but was curious to see how I could make use of it. I think the key to using it, live or in a studio, is to be sure the levels aren't too high. Also, I think it's better suited for solo sections, not really melody. Thanks for the listen and comments.

AH, Brecker and the wah. Oh, yeah, Steve. Sensational sounds once again. Cool changes and a funky band.

Enjoy whatever happens!

That backing track style was a really cool, funky groove.

Loved it!! I liked how you kept the melody pretty simple so that the wah effect could shine. Fantastic all the way around!!

Gotta love a wah wah pedal!
Sounds great to me.
Another well composed instrumental.
You had me smiling from the git go!

Tano Music- I'm very glad you enjoyed the song. It is a "niche" effect for saxophone, but it was so cool sounding I just had to get it recorded. Thank you for the comments and for listening.

Another great production - quirky and saxy - though I suspect I'd have prefereed the sax without the wah.

MarioD- The wah pedal is a cool effect. I don't think it's something I would want to use all of the time. Thanks for listening. I'm glad I made you smile.

Stevie Wonder meets Kenny G or in this case.... You.

Very nice job on the sax.

WaoBand- I went back and forth on the way idea. But I really wanted to hear how it would sound recorded. I'm not entirely satisfied with how the wah performed using the vocal effects processor. Might have to try and do some more editing to the settings. It's a cool effect, but not something I think I'd make regular use of when playing. Thanks for the comments and for listening.
