Dear Riley

'Dear Riley' is my sonic mea culpa, admitting I was too busy to see the pain of those closest to me. It's a note to self to sprinkle in a little more kindness – it goes a long way.

As always thanks to BIAB for providing the means for my self expression, one song at a time.
Lyrics on Soundcloud.
Key Eb Tempo 76 bpm
Looking at my daw tracks the backing band is quite minimal:
2045 Piano acoustic
1759 Bass
1831 Guitar Electric Rythhm
real Drums Rock Southern Ev.
368 Guitar Acoustic Strumming
2692 Organ
2209 Bouzouki
Xpandr 2- string & horn bit at end.

Izzy, so glad I decided to listen…excellent production and what a vocal delivery! You said the message was “personal”, so I didn’t try to understand what you were getting at—thanks for that explanation, otherwise I’d be trying to decipher instead of just listening and enjoying. I think the ending bit was very nice—a change of pace, but right in line with your composition. Thanks for sharing this!

Simple and emotional song, and the dynamic changes between the different parts are right up my alley.
Enjoyed my listen!

Hey! Thanks so much for listening and for the awesome feedback! I'm relieved you enjoyed it. I was worried the "personal" message might be a bit too deep. "Deciphering" is best left to ancient hieroglyphs and IKEA instructions, not my tunes. Glad you could just kick back and listen. And I'm especially happy you liked the ending bit - I was trying to set the scene for an uplifting happy ending vibe.. Thanks again for taking the time! Your ears are clearly highly sophisticated and appreciate fine art…

Dankeschön! (I hope Google Translate didn't lead me astray!). I'm thrilled you enjoyed it. I was going for "simple and emotional," so mission accomplished! And I'm glad the dynamic changes resonated with you - I was worried they might be too subtle, like trying to distinguish between different types of German bread. Challenging, but rewarding if you get it right! Seriously though, thanks for the listen and the lovely feedback! It makes all the musical angst worthwhile. smile

A great song about improving one's self. What a cool song, Izzy. I really like the dynamics. Nice use of the synth-like sound going into that very cool ending.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi, Izzy.

The vocals have a sort of early '60s vibe to me - love it.

The backing tracks do what they need to do, highlighting the vocal. Nice work building and pulling back on the instrumentation.

The simple harmonies workd, and I love the instrumental ending.

Lotta good things happening here with the vocals and the “connect your own dots” write.
We especially liked:
“Maybe tomorrow when The sun will shine again
The pain will lessen too Every thing will start anew
But then I'll be her shield Against the dark and cold
And we will walk again Across the shifting sand”

Nice open mix with good dynamics as evident on our monitors and looking at the waveform.

Excellent session group and we loved the outro string and horn bits.

Enjoyed it!

The arrangement at the beginning reminded me of some classic GoBetweens songs (Robert's tunes mainly).
Your voice didn't really sit in the mix until the band came in - a bit too naked against the piano - and there seemed some pitch discrepancies ...sometime BIAB tracks have pitch probs.
When the band is happening it's all happening.

Cheers

Hey Marty
Thanks so much for the feedback—it’s like a high-five for my songwriting soul! Your shout-out to the dynamics and that quirky ending made my day. Turns out, all that fiddling with sounds didn’t just result in a weird alien noise after all.
Thanks Marty

Hey Janice & Bud

Wow, first off, thank you for the stellar feedback—it's like a warm sun shining on my creative dunes! I'm genuinely thrilled you dug the vocals and that "connect your own dots" vibe; I was half-worried folks might just draw a stick figure and call it a day, but hey, if it sparked some magic for you, that's a bonus for me Those lyrics you highlighted? Absolute heartstring-pullers for me too—it's humbling to know they hit home, especially the part about being a shield in the shifting sand.
And props for spotting the dynamics in the mix; it’s always a relief when the waveform looks as good as it sounds on your end.
Your notes on the open mix, dynamics, and that killer session group made my day; I owe those strings and horns a round of applause for stealing the show. And the fact that you enjoyed the whole shebang? That's the best fuel for my next project. Here’s to more sunny tomorrows and fewer shifting sands.
Thanks again for the sincere encouragement; it's feedback like yours that keeps me strumming.

Best wishes and happy listening,
Izzy

G'day Ray
Thanks so much for listening! Comparing me to The Go-Betweens, even just the vibe of Robert's tunes (he is also a brilliant author, just quietly), is high praise indeed. I'm going to ride that compliment all the way to my next songwriting session.
Regarding the vocals at the start... guilty as charged! I seem to have gone full 'naked vulnerability' a little too early. Clearly, I need a vocal sweater until the band arrives to offer a sonic hug. And the pitch, oh the pitch! Those darn BIAB tracks are sometimes possessed by tiny, out-of-tune gremlins (see joke below). I'll wage war on them, I swear.
But "when the band is happening it's all happening" basically made my week. Glad to hear that finally the sonic machinegun starts firing on time!"

Corny Joke warning.........

A Dude goes into a music shop (remember them?) and buys a guitar.

A few days later he returns it complaining that it keeps going out of tune.

The salesman and the store manager play it and it sounds great,

Dude says _ "Well every time I sing it goes out of tune" .........ouch

Izzy, this is a great song
I did not find it to be "personal" as I think many can relate to it.
Loved that arrangement
Great vocal, lyrics, and mix
IMHO this is your best to date

A mastic production, especially when the whole band comes in. I like the piano intro and the strings and horn at the end. Nice addition.
Excellent lyrics. My favorite lines: "Riley was scared today I saw it in her eyes/she don't buy her friends no plastic smiles and lies."

Hi Izzy.

I love your composition and the way you've arranged it.
Kudos on the vocals too. They are heartfelt and passionate.
As I listened, I couldn't help but get caught up in your presentation.
I found the journey enjoyable, entertaining and thought-provoking.

hi Scott
Wow, thanks so much! I'm thrilled you dug the "mastic production" – I must confess that I had no clue what "mastic" meant but your powers of observation are uncanny because I was secretly hoping someone would notice the painstakingly applied layers of sonic chewing gum! Glad the piano intro and the string/horn finale hit the mark; they were my attempt at a musical equivalent of a perfectly timed dramatic sigh. And honestly, hearing you loved those Riley lines makes my day. I figured those plastic smiles and lies deserved a good lyrical smackdown. Next time, I might try adding a tuba solo during the smackdown... for extra mastic-ation. 😁
My best regards to you.
